symbolism of biomes?
meadows - training biome, not a lto of distinguishing characteristics. meadows and deciduous forests exist all over europe.
black forest - seems to be a direct reference to germany, central europe. relatively close to scandinavia.
swamps - peat bogs are found as close as scandinavia, such as Linnunsuo. also in UK and throughout europe.
mountains - could be alps, urals, scandes, etc. still not leaving europe to find this climate.
plains - this is where it starts to get interesting. surely i am not the only player to notice that the plains are currently the last biome, and that it kind of implies it is farthest from the natural home of vikings, scandinavia. the plains seem to be a direct metaphor for north american exploration by vikings. the plains is an environment in the central US, with fulings positioned as native americans, with their own tribal culture and improvised tech, and lox are buffalo.
ashlands - very southern climate, likely equatorial, like north africa.
deep north - arctic circle

The plains, interestingly, seems more like a circumpolar bog/moor biome to me. You have aspens groves, cloudberry (which grows virtually only on bogs), and TONS of mosquitoes!

"Swamp - Represents the burdening anguish of european fiscal pressure. An unrelenting machinery designed to feed a mastodontic and insatiable creature, that raises above all the souless bodies rotting from the gangrene that is taxation. Awaken by the smell of hope and joy of an adventurer, still not suffocated by the despair from the life-sucking bureaucracy, and the gold in their pockets..." That's exactly what I was thinking... Usury is wrong, but the trolls are in the black forest...

I've always thought of the plains as a likeness of the Mediterranean coastlands, where barley and flax were cultivated in abundance. It also makes sense with the Viking history; some individuals serving the Byzantines as the Varangian guards, and some Vikings went far south to Constantinople and even further, to trade wool, furs, amber, dried fish, among other things.

Meadows - Represents the beautiful welcoming newbie friendly biome inspired by the green european countryside.
Black Forest - Represents the spooky forest where many european fairy tales take place.
Swamp - Represents the burdening anguish of european fiscal pressure. An unrelenting machinery designed to feed a mastodontic and insatiable creature, that raises above all the souless bodies rotting from the gangrene that is taxation. Awaken by the smell of hope and joy of an adventurer, still not suffocated by the despair from the life-sucking bureaucracy, and the gold in their pockets.
Mountains - Possibly just simple snowy mountains, that's all.
Plains - I think there's plenty of plains in Europe too. Maybe mediterranean, maybe baltic, maybe just agricultural land anywhere in within the continent.

St. Petersburg Russia also has hand-sized mosquitoes, So Russian Steppes seems to make the most sense. Alaska is more mountains than plains.

Northmen were often employed as mercenaries in the Mediterranean El Monseur if I remember hired a bunch to fight for him and as personal guards and they saw quite a bit of service in the desert areas. meadows - training biome, not a lto of distinguishing characteristics. meadows and deciduous forests exist all over europe.

They were used all around europe, they charted many rivers through europe. Loads of documents where northmen were fighting even in north africa as mercenaries. They were prized for their fierceness and size. Read up on the Varangian guards.Northmen were often employed as mercenaries in the Mediterranean El Monseur if I remember hired a bunch to fight for him and as personal guards and they saw quite a bit of service in the desert areas.

I always thought of the plains as Steppe lands, like Mongolia is often pictured.
As to the mistlands, Ashlands, and far north? These are likely symbolic of Niflheim, Muspelhiem, and Helheim, 3 of the other 9 (10 counting Valheim) realms of Norse Myth.

in this example i see plains as the russian/ukranian steppe. the Rus Vikings are often forgotten compared to their kin who went west to england and beyond. the plains may be a nod to them.
