What is it with companies and thinking Crossplay is this big necessary thing?
Is this a demand made by microsoft?
I don't know why so many studios waste so much time on this when it tends to ♥♥♥♥ up so much, and the demographics don't really overlap to begin with. It's fine for something like Smite where there's a big public queue and a static game environment, or where pub sessions are a common thing like with Deep Rock Galactic. But for small server ecosystems that are mostly local hosted: you're wasting your time on a feature almost nobody is going to use, and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ things up for everybody in the process.
Also, why the ♥♥♥♥ are you guys working on a console port when the game isn't even finished yet?

Cross-platform gaming is becoming a thing because multiple gaming platforms exist, and it's a bad business plan to exclude large groups of potential customers just because they use a different platform to play games.
Oh, so when Phil throws piles of money at your studio its called "good business plan"? Got you brother
Obviously, you made no attempt to research this subject before coming here to give us your thoughts on it, otherwise you would have known that Iron Gate contracted a separate team specifically to port the game to console, so your theory about Devs wasting their time on consoles instead of development of the game is incorrect... Iron Gate isn't doing it, some other company is.
Yet for some reason all of the effort put into a game recently tied to crossplay. Do you really believe everything companies say? Or do you honestly believe that IG is not directly involved into porting process at all?

Let me correct that for you: Cross Play = More Players.
More Players = More Unit Sales
More Unit Sales = More Profit
To simplify the math, Cross Play = More Profit
That's it. That's the grand sum of it. We exist to provide others with our money.
Port to other Platform = Profit.
Crossplay is not required for that. Especially not for a game like VH. At least not from the start while it's still in early access.
And publishing the port on XBOX/GamePass (which requires crossplay) while the map generation algorithm is not "synced"? How did that fall through quality control (at the outsourced party of course...)???
And I've just learned how borked crossplay actually is.

Porting was done by a third-party.

Just because it's a service that you don't understand or may never use, doesn't mean it's "useless", in fact I have seen multiple posts on other threads of people asking about cross-platform playing with their friends, etc.... not everyone owns a PC, or gaming PC, just as not everyone owns a console.... others own multiple consoles / PC's... It's a needed service these days. especially on a game that allows multiple players to play together. Frankly, if they weren't trying to get as much of the global market as they could, I would seriously wonder why.

Pretty sure they've said that working on the port doesn't impact development of the game on PC. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this.
As for cross-platform, the more people that can play together, the merrier. It's a good goal to have for basically any game.

How can it not though? It takes up time and manpower. Even if they're outsourcing it: unless somebody else is paying for it: it's eating up their funding.

Disagree. It's only useful for service model games that need to pad out their queues, or for P2P games where pub sessions are very common. For small local hosted servers, like you have in Valheim, where modding is a big deal: it's a total waste of time because it's only useful for an incredibly small segment of the user base.

Porting a game is one thing, and makes sense from a financial perspective. Crossplay, however…. yeah, I’m failing to see the incentive there.
The more community-favored choice that would keep the game alive for a decade or longer would be to enable mod and Steam Workshop support
