Ouch, damn that must hurt. Sorry to hear mate, hope venting helped. Just a question out of curiosity, did you run any mods? I hear they can mess stuff up between game versions, might be worth a look.

It really sucks that happened to you and i don't envy your position. But i do hope you take this as a lesson for all EA titles and take my advice and back up your games manually after each session. It takes very little time and gives you a whole lot of peace of mind.
I do this particularly because it is an Early Access game, a fact you would have had to have seen on the store page. You agreed to buy into the game in its current state.

TL;DR: Sucks but its the nature of every single early access product on steam and everywhere else.

Early Access. It will be done when it is done, until then back up your game or play something else. I've been on steam now for 10 years and this has been true ever since Steam started the whole Early Access thing.

Isn't this something we can expect to happen in an Early Access game?

As the game is in development, deleted progress may be pretty common. Not sure about Valheim, specifically, but other games in the genre regularly go through this.

In those games, though, if you want to keep going in your world, you need to roll back to the most recent version that worked for your world. AND THEN turn off updates so you can stay on that version.

I'm not sure that'll fix your issue, but it might.

That sucks, but it's early access and the devs have been warning people to keep backups.

Dealing with bugs, including game-annihilating ones, is part of the experience you're agreeing to when you play a game in early-access.

Sorry about your loss of progress, it's a hard lesson to learn!

Yknow, recently Ive been going back to the old games I loved as a child, and you know what Ive found out? Ive replayed them so much over the years, that even when I lose everything on them, I find that I kinda dont care. I cant help but feel that for a game this linear, you could probably apply the same logic at some point.

As for the OP, it is common knowledge the World eater bug exists. Look it up OP, if you ever come back. Theyve stopped to work on bugs, so maybe someday itll be patched out. Either way, wish ya luck wherever you wander. ^^

to be fair - it sounds more like you did something wrong. but even if not, its early access. dont bind your heart to it too much.
