Iron man mode. Not.
My first playthrough, I died a LOT, and my skills stayed in the basement. So I figured, wth, restart fresh and do an unofficial iron man mode, using what I've learned. Went well for a long time, many hours. It really makes a difference when you know the ropes. So...
I'm in the Black Forest, taking out what turns out to be 8 or 9 greys around a tower, when a troll walks up behind me. Funny how they do that. I figure I can take him after mopping up the last greys, figure heck, I'll see if I can go up in the tower and snipe him from there. I've done the 'kite through the forest peppering him with arrows' thing more times than I can count. Something different. Get in the tower, find the stairs don't go all the way to the top. No problem, I'll just run back out, go back to plan pincushion.
Except the @#$! thing pastes me from the OUTSIDE while I'm in the @#$! tower. Dead on day 28. So I hit devcommands, debugmode, and god, and gave myself back the 10% skill hit. To @#$! with that @#$!ing iron man thing.
Seriously, I mean to keep track of mistakes and deaths this time, and I expect FAR fewer of them on this runthrough. But this game, sometimes...

Me and two others just finished a playthrough where death was permanent, and corpses could not be looted. On death you had to create a new character w/ a new name. Corpse markers littered the map.
Splash damage is splash damage. You should have ran to the top asap!

THERE'S the condemnation I was looking for! Well, I'm playing solo, so it's not like I'm letting anyone else down. After a certain amount of time spent, I don't care to start over. Life's too short.
So I guess this rules out you and I playing a Hardcore play through.

I think you've got to be a bit of a masochist to enjoy a game like this at all. But yeah, hardcore's too much for me, even with safe words.
So I guess this rules out you and I playing a Hardcore play through.
I'm a 55 year old wimp. This game is not that hard if you take it slow. I enjoy starting fresh so playing self imposed hardcore isn't that big of a deal (to me).
Right now I'm playing with these rules:
1) No portals.
2) Permanent death (100% skill loss-new character creation on death)
3) corpses CAN be looted.

Taking it slow is one of the keys. So is running away and paying attention. I have no rules but again, trying to not die much if at all... yesterday got hit by a dwarf invasion not long after first boss and had to run for my life for quite some time before I got clear. Also hit my first crypt in the forest (score! 12 cores!) and had to run out 3 times to heal, and the final 2** skeleton I just left him down there, it wasn't worth the risk and I had all I needed from the place. The didn't care if I die character would have gone back for the last bits of loot...
speaking of corpses can be looted, anyone ever die a few times @ home to make storage containers?

Log trolls do AOE damage, the same as if you use a stagbreaker, but bigger. This is why you can't plant your carrots too close to the edge of your defenses.
Those black forest stone towers are traps. They can be damaged by trolls, and more slowly by everything else, and you are not at a level where you can repair them yet. They're also pretty cramped inside even if you find a good one.
I've been experimenting with troll traps recently. Dig a ditch, place some beams across it. You can run across but the troll has to go the long way around. It takes some preparation, but I'm less likely to get splatted while getting hung up on things in the black forest. My last ditch wasn't long enough to handle both the troll and the greys that joined in. Die and learn. My philosophy is that there's no such thing as cheese when playing permadeath. It's just common sense to reduce risk as much as possible. Getting at least one piece of troll armor helps a lot before going into a crypt.
I'm having fun with permadeath runs. Partly it's because I like Valheim, and there don't seem to be any good substitutes out at the moment. So far, the furthest I've gotten was to be killed by the Elder after scouting the swamps. Got tangled up in the tendrils and couldn't move.

I hate when a greydwarf shaman casts his poison cloud through walls and doors. No basement is safe. It's perhaps a limitation of the Unity engine.
If you let one get near a crop, they can spray quite a lot of veggies to death. The same with the oil slick guys on the plains.

In the same genre; I hate when a greydwarf shaman casts his poison cloud through walls and doors. No basement is safe. It's perhaps a limitation of the Unity engine.

I know that NOW, about the towers... and yeah, if you let a shaman get near the crops, they can wipe out a LOT with just one hit. The oil slick guys at the prairie are even worse.

I feel the pain of OP since the first death for me was when i met a troll. Took cover from having trees on both sides of me but the bastard knocked both them and me down in one good swing but..
Been hunting for surtling cores and using mace. Can't see this implemented as my swings would be stopped every time by the corridor walls. Would be great to know if the damage is halved, or maybe even count how many obstacles there is in the way of the swing and use that as a divider but to bluntly stop the swing is not something i would be waiting for.
I get the idea, it would be nice to have walls, rocks and other destructables actually protect you but where does it end? I mean, should the attacker get stunned for hitting something that can't be damaged or should only structures have this "impenetrable" element to them and the first wall would take the brunt of the swing, what would the animation be like?
I think it's fair that both my and enemies swings can pass through objects but that's just me.
Thinking this damage divider is already implemented as you can chop down multiple trees at the same time.

I really dislike this as well. I occasionally have broken stuff in my home on the other side of walls that were not even cut down 50% (stone). Those micro towers are deathtraps against a log-troll. remember: they are swinging at YOU, not the building. If they swing, they think it will connect.
I have restarted and am going for minimal deaths as well. I have no delusions that something won't cap me eventually; bad luck can get anyone from a busted boat to a ambush **spear furby or cross boarder enemy you didn't see (that wolf in the meadows..)

i couldnt agree more I agree that the damage through walls from large enemies needs to be addressed. It kind of makes fortifications worthless otherwise you need to build like quadruple thick walls. That doesn't seem like an intended gameplay element. Aoe slams I can agree with but the swings and direct attacks shouldn't go through walls.

I'm still waiting for someone to chastise me for breaking out the console commands... But yeah, I'm definitely going to make a distinction. If I die because I screwed up or miscalculated, that's on me. But I know the game well enough now to know that dying as I did in the OP is 1) Bollocks and 2) fairly common in Valhiem.
Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the game, and I know, early access, small dev group, etc. But as long as it IS that way, I think true Iron Man is for masochists only.

Yet, it is rather easy to pinpoint a troll from the top of a tower. You just have to arrange for him to never see you: shoot when he's facing another direction, and then withdraw behind a wall element (that you eventually built if the tower is not in a good shape). Switch to stealth mode and wear the full troll set. That's it.
