How to play on the same map with a friend at different times.
How to play on the same map with a friend at different times.
Greetings, I will try to explain the essence of the problem in the lecture.
My friend and I play Valheim on his map, for this we have to cooperate, choose a time for a meeting to play together, it's not always convenient.
But sometimes I want to go alone to his card to do something.
I would like to synchronize the map so that I can enter our world at any time.

Idk really, only have own limited experiance, but where i live (poland) some BIG isps are doing NAT with no way out. Previously you could buy yourself out at one time fee at least, and even earlier NATs were only on wifi rural internets. I got lucky with fiber that offers external IP still but its not cheap. Ew, is it really getting that bad?
I've been setting up dedicated game servers and networking ♥♥♥♥ for years, I only heard people talking ambiguously about "Running out of IP addresses" but I lived through Y2K, so I just immediately dismissed it as another way to sell old bottled water.
Yeah, Im old enough to use physical dictionaries from time to time, so know the value of good documentation too. The times are moving on thou. We might not like youtube, but for some people its way easier and faster to process and apply the information in that form these days. And look at the OP again, hes not even using a good translator, nor has idea of dedi servers, he'll barely understand basics here. Most likely chance of getting anywhere is a video guide, at least IMHO. stuff
I do appreciate the links thou!
Junctions are great, but i'd be wary of using it online... Valheim saves can be base for few server instances (in different sessions), last one out the door gets to save. So it could happen that both friends play solo by mistake and one looses progress.
At this complexity point remote start of the server on the friends PC could work too haha.

Oh yes, it's really getting that bad with IPv4 addresses only(!). I count myself lucky that I still get a new routeable IPv4 address every day. Most ISPs here do CGN (=Carrier Grade NAT) too.
But IPv6 is no problem usually. Only some mobile ISPs/networks don't use it afaik.
Valheim is IPv6 compatible so all that shouldn't be a problem....
Then you may even be a bit older than me - I'm not sure I ever really used a physical dictionary. :-) And while time is moving on it's my opinion that YT is what one should recommend last... matter of opinion / to each their own (to some degree).Yeah, Im old enough to use physical dictionaries from time to time, so know the value of good documentation too. But while I quoted you a lot my reply was not intended to be a directed at you - forgot to make that clear...
Maybe - I like to assume/expect more experience at first.... And look at the OP again, hes not even using a good translator, nor has idea of dedi servers, he'll barely understand basics here. Most likely chance of getting anywhere is a video guide, at least IMHO.
My pleasure. I do appreciate the links thou!

Yeah, junctions are not to be trifled with and using another sync method may be more complex.

Even if they aren't actually running out of IP addresses, whenever I see some kind of service that restricts users ability to modify their experience, I just assume it will eventually become standard, because Corporations (usually at the behest of government entities) absolutely do not want the end user to have any more freedom than is absolutely necessary to extract money from them.
We're seeing the move against AI now in the US, with CHATGPT founding company OpenAI (That name will be highly ironic in just a moment) Publishing a whitepaper and submitting it to congress openly advocating for the restriction of "High End AI enabled Hardware" (Specifically named Nvidia's A1000 iirc, but it will also extend to RTX Titan/4090 class) to only licensed users. To me, it looks like no more a naked attempt to corner the emerging market like what Pan Am tried to do against the Hugh's Aircraft company back in the late 40's.

What you want is a dedicated server. (check guides section or youtube)
Run it on your PC, or the friends PC, or buy one for pretty cheap from hundreds of server providers.
For first two options you'd need an external IP address with ports open, not every internet provider offers this nowadays, some can be convinced to allow it if you talk to them thou.
If you cant assure any of the PCs running when the other person wants to play, and dont want to spend more money, then technically you could synchronize the save files over the internet, but that question is more for the google.
If you own your own router, you control your port access. Aside from the fact that the router and modem provided by the ISP aren't free (You lease them at like $15 a month), the added control over your own hardware makes a very compelling argument for just having your own Router or even modem.

You can own your router (or even modem) and still be behind an internal ISP NAT. There are ISPs out there that you can buy own hardware for only to be foreced to set it up in a way that blocks you. Also i had instances of the opposite too, hardware completely sealed with no user access, but was possible to call them physically, ask politely and bam you have ports open. Its really not about the hardware but how ISP has its network set up.
With the limited ipv4 numbers and ever growing number of users, its only gonna get worse.

Renting a server means you have a much easier time dealing with the admin side of things (Normaly there's an AP or GUI that even a boomer zoomer could handle). It's not hard to admin your own Dedicated server manually, but if you have absolutely no networking experience at all, then the path is much more tedious so for total newbies, renting a server for a couple bucks is usually the better option. You also won't have to unmask your public IP. (Or go through steps to set up a DNS domain to avoid doing so)

Don't go to stupid YT for technical documentations. All you get there are demonstrations of technical processes - no way too look some detail up later, trigger your visual memory by one of a few memorable pictures of parts of a process (just one continous stream) and so on... What you want is a dedicated server. (check guides section or youtube)

I've even seen manuals for using free cloud computing test accounts from Oracle (even free after the test period?). Run it on your PC, or the friends PC, or buy one for pretty cheap from hundreds of server providers.
The RaspberryPI may work too but they've been unobtainium for some time now. I'd recommend Thin[hackaday.com]Clients[www.parkytowers.me.uk] an old laptop or sth. like Intel NUCs
I'd like to agree and personally do prefer opening the proper ports (firewall) with forwarding (router) but VH does use " For first two options you'd need an external IP address with ports open, not every internet provider offers this nowadays, some can be convinced to allow it if you talk to them thou.crossplay[playfab.com]" which uses the ugly hack of UDP hole punching[en.wikipedia.org] to circumvent most firewall/router/ISP hurdles.

Haven't tried that but I think it should work kinda like this:
- A: Set the world to local storage in VH.
- A: Add the local world storage folder to e.g. GoogleDrive.
- A: Share it in GoogleDrive with your friend.
- B: (Create a World with the same name and 1.)
- B: Configure GD to sync that shared folder with the other local storage folder. (If that isn't possible maybe junctions[schinagl.priv.at] can help.)
- Always make sure the files are successfully synced.
