The game isn't broken nor "making" you lose skills... that would be how YOU are playing causing that.

The whole point is to NOT die, which means being fully prepared at all times (full hp and stamina buff as well as rested bonus), using terrain to block potential incoming attacks, and running away if necessary.

The game is NOT about being a super hero and rushing into every battle... If you don't want to die (and get skill loss) then learn how to AVOID death, instead of running around as if you are invincible... because you aren't.

The game disincentivizes dying a lot. In other games sometimes it's just easier to die to restore your stats or to warp than to play the game normally. Or to just die repeatedly with a nearby bed to kill a boss. You'll come out with low stats if you play like that.

I hate dying and lose skill points and personally modded it but not to take it away permanently. The fact you hate losing progress is why you should take some effort to not die at all. I "only" lose 1 skill pt per death and even that sucks. But I do agree that the default penalty is way too harsh.

Have you tried not dying? Until you get into the swamp biome the games enemies are rather easy.

Set yourself up for success by building small spawn point beds (re-spawn point). So if you do die, you can easily run and get your loot before the skill point reduction timer runs out! For example: I died in a swamp dungeon a few days ago but I have a small hut with a portal in the nearby forest for easy access to this swamp. It was easy, I re-spawned at home, jumped through the portal, made a quick naked run to where I died and retrieved everything way before the timer expired. All because I prepared for that death beforehand, even though I didn't know it would happen for sure.
