That *is* actually the Spanish translation of lox. Lox in English is a word for a filet of salmon.

"Salmon" is not even a correct translation, because Lox typically refers to "smoked salmon" today. Originally, the term Lox comes from the German - Salmon lachs. Which is a salt brine method of preparation. Nowadays, it means smoked salmon.

Maybe they are planning to add a cold smoker?

Yeah, I kinda believe that with the original they went for a pun with "ox" or something. That entirely flew by whoever landed a translation job for the game though.

Lox and Salmon are not quiet the same thing. Lox is treated Salmon. So all lox are salmon but not all salmon are Lox. Kind of like all squares are rectangle but not all rectangles are square.

Pretty sure Lox is Hebrew not actually English. Just a word we incorporated because we can buy it at the grocery store.

DO agree with you though should not have been translated at all. Matter of fact I am of the PERSONAL opinion none of the names should be translated unless it results in a insulting word/phrase thru the magic that is multiple languages. But that's just me.

That's my point besides "salmon" being wrong, these are all fantasy creatures so if they don't have an already translated version because of existing equivalents, just use the original.

That's incorrect. Lox in English is *usually* used to refer to smoked salmon, perhaps, but it doesn't *have* to be. It means salmon filet in general. And no, it doesn't come from German, either. It comes from Proto-Indo-european, and now exists in similar forms in many Germanic languages. And actually, if you want to be really pedantic about it... in Yiddish, which certainly predates modern German, the word is laks, which used exclusively to describe raw salmon.

As a translator myself, I tend towards this more often than not. In this context of fantasy creatures, it doesn't matter if it's heavily localized or not. Those names they already did translate end up being weird anyway.

Definitely "salmon" is a bad choice here for many reasons.

But fish wraps would be so much easier to make if you could use lox meat for them :(

The term and dish was originally Scandinavian/German - gravlax or gravad laks. (Lax or laks means "salmon" in the Scandinavian languages. In German its Lachs.)
The word "Lox" is indeed Yiddish, coined in 1941 in NYC. But its referring to smoked or cured salmon, not just salmon in general. Today if you order "Lox" anywhere, they will bring you smoke and/or cured salmon.
