I believe it's poison, and those things are hard to shake once you get a good hit on you and there's more than one on your tail.

answering my own question - appears their projectile dmg is blunt + poison, with the poison actually being bit more (45 blunt, 50 poison).

hopefully resist poison meads like for swamp creatures will work to mitigate the poison

Yes, poison potions help against them.

I'm playing with the CLLC mod and can have up to 5 star growths and the 3+ star ones hit really hard. Can dodge or kite most but if one shot gets through, that tick dmg is brutal. Will have to constantly keep poison mead going when near tar pits

I find after getting hit with a piece of tar you jump to get rid of the major dot dmg
