How do you stop spawns
and no workshops do not work, it just pushes mobs out a little farther and they still walk in and start destroying workbenches
I have over 117 workbenches spread out through the forest around me, yet some how, a hog or greyling or neck is always just in the distance destroying something and eventually making its way to my walls
is the only answer to this to build on an island? its ridiculous how many mobs are force spawned, no matter what measures you take (the game does instant respawns even with the kill all cheat)

Well greylings and boars, and even greydwarfs don't bother me that much, it is the trolls that are ruining the enjoyment for me. Had an shore home, and 3 trolls spawn in and wreck it except for the bed, so every respawn is right in the middle of those 3 trolls (almost feels like te hobbit, except these won't petrify in sunlight)

I will definitely do this at my starter base, although I have found the perfect size island, with enough stone it will work great, Thank you for the suggestionA complete base defense has 3 components:
1) Work bench coverage to prevent spawns inside your base
2) An earthen barrier to prevent mobs from walking into your base (trench works fine, you can raise the ground with a hoe to do the same thing, or flatten the outside of your trench for a nicer look that leaves your base on elevated ground)
3) A wall to break line-of-sight from the outside so mobs don't aggro on you or your base structures.
Nice suggestions, but don't forget the most forgettable :P
Just lay down some wood beams. Enemies can't step over them. And because they are so low, they also don't attack them.

Does that include Troll club/AoE attacks? Also, what do you do with uneven ground, use 26 or 45 degree beams? Or stagger step the straight beams?

you don't need workbench coverage in your base since almost all player built structure blocks (aka things you interact with or some furniture objects) block spawns in the same radius that workbenches do

I havent played for some time now, but didnt light sources also prevent mob spawns inside your base??
Make sure there isnt a dark spot for them to spawn inside and you are good.
ps. you only need the workbench coverage to build stuff, after you have done building you can remove it, you dont need it after.
Edited: ohh mobs cant jump (at least last time i played), so a moat does work wonders combined with well lit areas

That asnwers my question about my old save thanks, I had workshops built around them to try and keep mobs atleast a little away from the walls I have my settlement surrounded by walls and workbenches/torches/wards spread out to ensure mobs spawn outside the walls. As long as the mobs don't have line of sight on you, they won't aggro.* I've never had an issue with mobs attacking walls without first seeing me, and I have a large compound to defend.
*Edited to add that they won't aggro on walls themselves. If you have any other structures outside your walls, yeah they will go after them iirc.
edit
unfortunately it is an old save so i wont really play it anymore, but I do like to go around and admire my first base lol

I'm sure there's a mod that increases the effective radius of workbenches.

Who the f*** builds 117(!) workbenches to suppress a little mob who at the most is a bit annoying, but usually just walks around doing nothing?

Go to a little island because in a mainland you just cant or can but needs 3774728742 more workbenches ( remember that workbench area most be overslaped by another one in the edges or will not work )

I fortify my workbenches by enclosing them in stakewalls. You can suppress spawns like this, but the workbench radii need to overlap absolutely seamlessly.

Thats really annoying, especially no mater how many walls I make theres still some sort of pig or greyling just being annoying
the forced spawns are really annoying, i dont need 16 deer and neck standing outside my base at all times
