Arguably the OP could not have missed what s/he bought. There are screenshots on the store page and I assume people don't blindly or randomly decides to buy games. Thus it'd not be a stretch for some to consider OPs comment to contain an additional implied message criticizing the game. It's not necessary the case, but the possibility exist, this is the internet after all with trolls, edgelords and whatever else.

Is it all supposed to look like squares?!?!?!

It's an intended design, everything isn't graphics.

What exactly is the problem with that?

I'm sure there's a way that you could complete this statement that would make sense to you:

"plays a game for 0.1 hours, complains about <something you don't like> on steam discussions and never touched it since"

I don't even see a complaint. It's a statement and a question, and the question was answered in the first reply.

I'm not sure if it's an artistic decision or meant to reduce the resource requirements of the game (or both?), but I actually like the low detail textures and low polygon count models. The only time it becomes quite evident and a bit unsightly is when you're mining ground and chunks become super jagged and stretched out.

According to Valheim's creator, it is an artistic choice.

I will add the rationale that it makes you draw more information from color and light than from edges and thus increases your sensitivity to color. For me it is like an impressionist painting.

My gripe is that they don't quite follow-through: the change in "brush strokes" for distant objects is inconsistent.

I'm pretty sure it's both. And yes, yes rendering could use some kind of mode-switch when it gets up close and personal with rocks. Without storing any actual detail for the rock, the game could just make stuff up out of the kind of detail we don't remember, like the twinkly-dealies from the mineral content, which could be rendered pointilisticly to keep the style.

:)

Yes, that is the intended graphical fidelity of Valheim's textures.
