The problem with my ocean view property

Is that even though I'm well above sea level (owing to a ton of rock smashing and infilling), when the tide moves in and out or if there's a sea swell the ground water table moves up and down.

It's simply mind-boggling to me that the devs thought to incorporate this but they really have. Water doesn't just flow thru channels, - it also percolates theu soil, just as in real life. It also means that my basement floods and I have to raise it. Glass half full as it were............

I wish I could craft a sump pump. Is there a mod for that ?

The secret is to build into a natural harbor cove or golf. Massive waves are no issue there, or anywhere for me. I like them as they make it much more challenging to navigate boats in storm weather or find yourself on the beach. It does look odd in certain spots, like Plains or Meadow + storm = odd, as the waves are so big they could flood the whole plain if they kept going.

My friend and I put all our buildings on stilts.. lol.. we have an island off the shore and even on stilts sometimes the swells come indoors haha.. I personally love it and it causes me no stress..

Water doesn't flow through channels in Valheim. And water doesn't pass through soil as if it wasn't there in real life - if the water was that powerful in real life the ground would erode and your building collapse.

Water in Valheim is incredibly unrealistic: it has one static level irrespective of everything else and doesn't move or flow at all. The surface height changes with storms, emulating waves and storm surges, that's it.

the ground is one height map
water is another, that changes with storms and waves

I built a huge raised plateau for my pleasure palace that the trolls can only walk around and barely peer over. If they are dumb enough to chase me home I can stand on my front porch and shoot fire arrows straight into their eyes. It's glorious.

I hated it when the swells would put out my fire everytime they came up.

Good to know if so. I was going to try that for one of my ports. Now I'm glad I didn't waste the stone.

Correct, rock levies will not work unless you raise the ground behind it to the same height as the levy. Makes a great terraced look.

I've found bays much easier to put docks into as the swell doesn't get nearly as big in those areas as opposed to building on beaches that shoulder directly on open ocean. You seem to be placed higher above it or the game mechanic recognises that the swell doesn't need to be huge in those areas.

Exactly. The water flows right thru it during ocean swells. Pretty porous rock, evidently...........

Its the way the terrain is generated, instead of blocks of voxels, the game uses a line geometry... a line for sea level, a line for terrain with rocks and ore chunks buried into the terrain lines, this makes for faster terrain loading but limits the interaction between terrain and sea.

In brief this happens because the sea terrain is coded to lift and drop during storms, and as such there is not that level of detection for terrain collision... that would up the requirements by a tonne.

As an aside a Beech front cabin where there are high storm swells literally throws fish at you which as I recently discovered is the real way to go fishing (Thor Delivered)

If the swells getting that high are rare, just ignore it maybe. I had a couple of tries like that early game, and the only annoyance is that it puts the fires out for a few seconds on/off/on/off pattern on the worst days. If you are low enough that it happens regularly, not just in epic storms, a rebuild may be better.
