Multiplayer is just sad
Such huge potential wasted. It's just hundreds of servers with 0 players, or 1 player on them. All locked with a security key. You have a chance for players to do something that has really never been done well in this modern era of gaming. A chance for them to create the cities which are normally made by a dev team, a chance for them to create the world. Instead its just people building bigger, and bigger houses and sharing some screen shots.

People lock their servers because they don't want to be griefed. Seems pretty reasonable to me.
Completely agree. This is why we can't have nice things. I keep a DS open for close friends and family, only.
Griefers: you did this to yourselves; no sympathy.

Its a shame your so narrow minded. Do you host your own server? if so please post the details so we can all join and prove you wrong.

We have our own server.
We created a compilation of several mods, uploaded the complete file and provided the server, the TS-server and the mod-pack, but we only had trouble...
We would love to have more players on our server.
But, so far, who ever we let on our server, only destroyed buildings caused chaos or problems and disapeared again.
As long as only short-♥♥♥♥-kiddies want to destroy and disappear, we will no longer host our server without password.

Do people really think this mediocre indie game is somehow breaking new ground with building? Games as old as Ultima Online had player-created neighborhoods, and there have been probably HUNDREDS of games by now that have incredible building systems. Look up the old MMO game Wurm Online to see literal cities created by players, and if you want a newer example that isn't Minecraft, look at some of the things people have made in Conan: Exiles. Like incredible sprawling elaborate cities with palaces, and that game has modern high-quality graphics, not the PS1 play-doh blob that is this game lol.

Building is fun, and so is the gameplay.
Graphics don't make a game good. Look at how many SNES games are leaps and bounds better than anything released in the last 10 years on any media. There's a handful of current/next-gen gems, but by and large they are plagued by horrible writing, horrible voice acting, horrible combat, horrible gameplay in general, etc.
That, or they've been made in to 10 hour linear hand-holding events for those with the attention span of a gnat.

Really? #1: this isn't an mmo so stop comparing it to them, chalk and cheese
#2: graphics like PS1 play-doh? Only because clearly you have one dimensional eyes. What about the fantastic physics system? What about the fantastic wave system when you're boating around with a few pals that reacts to the weather and physics? What about the fantastic lighting and lightning system? What about the fantastic weather system? Atmospheric doesn't even begin to describe it. The graphical style in this game is a design choice.
If you don't like the game that's perfectly fine, no game is loved by everyone, but best to keep your mouth shut and just move on otherwise you just end up looking like a fool.

The game is being developed and marketed as a solo and/or coop-with-friends game.
This is not an open world MMO (and probably never will be)... It has nothing to do with "missing out on an opportunity" or "wasted potential"... They are building the game they envisioned, and that vision is not about being another MMORPG.
It's not meant to be some sort of 'Viking' version of RUST or something.

It's very easy to get onto a server, you just have a look in LFG, join their discord and apply, get white listed and get the password, it is simple and doesn't take much time at all.
Thing is, if you actually did that you would understand how poorly the current state of the game is for large scale multiplayer and would likely quit very quickly.
For starters, almost nothing respawns so you need active admins to constantly respawn resources.
The lag is horrible and the constant desynch means your boats take a large amount of damage while sailing them assuming they stay a float, it is not uncommon for boats to capsize due to this desynch issue, I lost 2 long boats in calm waters just outside my base.
Finally, your loot cache can be opened by anyone so if you die, crash or just plain log out, anyone can loot all your stuff.
In summary, good SP and Co-OP game but right now, terrible MP experience.

Even if wards were indestructible or some other anti-griefing mechanism was added; people would still find a way to mess things up for others. Duplicating your Portal names, landscaping as a griefing tool, killing bosses in a no boss world to enable raids, and that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure people dedicated to griefing would easily come up with a much longer and more inventive list.
Before you cry for IG to do something, be aware that if they switched entirely from creating content, fixing bugs, balancing, and addressing any other player issues, they would, at best, slow down or slightly inconvenience griefers.
Every multiplayer game has had some sort of this problem and I am unaware of *any* that have had long term success in eliminating it.
Server passwords that you only give out to people you trust is really the only effective and reasonable solution available.

The multiplayer was basically an afterthought for this game.. hence why it has so many loose ends and a lot of community servers rely on custom mods to keep things in order.
Once the developers have everything in the single-player potion of the game fleshed out, you can fully expect to see multiplayer improvements.. such as the majority of what mods are doing currently.
That being said, that sort of thing is likely the last thing to do on their list.. and rightfully so.
The bad news is the game uses the Unity Engine IIRC, which has its own unique limitations that you can only code around so much. If one major major thing happened with this game, I would hope for it to be the developers making their own Engine so that they can fully realize what this game can be.
Sadly, making your own Engine is no small feat and would likely take a few years.

Worlds ARE being created. I don't know why you think this would be a new concept since it's been happening ever since the game launched. Join a hosted server or host your own, then you can play with strangers in an open world and all the risk that entails.
Then you'll also figure out why leaving your personal servers open is a bad idea. Wards would help if they were indestructible but they are not. People are ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

It's actually better to not make cities due to the increase in lag. A central location that has portals going to different locations is better imo.
The server that I was apart of had our initial village and then later after exploring we had an off shore island that was kinda a city with a central fort/hub. Both areas were rather quite laggy which I didn't find enjoyable.
Luckily on the 2nd area I built my own area on a tiny spit of land within swimming distance from the island resulting in zero lag.
Eventually someone made a portal hub on top of a mountain and incorporated an ice cave as well. Kinda like a Greek amphitheater look to it.
