How does skill progression work?

Basically the title, and how useful are the skills actually? For example will you be able to jump higher or have more stamina/ run faster and stuff like that? Also, when you die do you start completely from zero again on the skill?

You are welcome.

Rested effect is also an interesting thing. 50%... FIFTY!
Doesn't matter what task you do. Even if just a greydwarve comes by, kill it rested.
Just ALWAYS be rested.

Not be rested all the time is the biggest beginner mistake. Your character will get a hard diminishing return in the future, but by the time you write here and ask, it will be too late. Sure you can still balance it, but your only option then is repetitive extra leveling.

To add on to this:

Skills that can be practiced indoors (running, jumping, stealth...) should be. Not only does Rested give a 50% XP bonus, but Resting grants an additional 100% bonus on top of that, for a total of +150% when both Rested and Resting at the same time.

This topic has come up earlier in the discussions and there are also links to trainers you can build to raise your skill level even before engaging in combat. Some of these have likewise been updated to show how to grow blood and elemental magic skills.

Skills do matter yes, they are not NEEDED but maxed out they help a lot.

When you die you lose 5% of EVERY skill you have obtained. So if you were at 100 you'd go down to 95 if you were at 50 you'd go down to 48.5 etc.. when you die you get a buff that dissalows skill drain on death for a certain period of time to allow you to hopefully recover your corpse.

basically working on the skills (level up by doing) results in:
- less stamina used for performing
- damage gets higher on weapons
- blocking lets you receive less damage
if im not wrong here

on dying its like DarthTanyon wrote: you receive a loss on randomly selected skill but you can train them again
