A question about difficulty
I run a private server. Occasionally a friend will log in, but I essentially play solo.
I made my first few forays into the Swamp and died miserably over and over. So much so, that I found a mod that allows me to enable some cheats just so I could recover all my gear. I ended up liking the infinite stamina cheat so I use it all the time.
I had full bronze gear, at least level 3. Shield, Mace, etc. I was able to kill the elder on my first attempt with fire arrows (and infinite stamina). I got the swamp key and visited my first dungeon. I got annihilated. Repeatedly. Mainly when I entered the rooms with the body piles that just kept spawning draugers. I tried quite a few times, but ended up using God mode to clear the dungeon. I hate myself.
But my question is, is it supposed to be this hard? Is it because I'm playing online? I **hate** cheating, but it came down to either that or giving up on the game.
Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for sharing this, i knew it but forgot to add it in my comment. And it gives you a hidden +50% experience buff many are not aware of... your rested buff (that gives stamina and health regen), you can always build a campfire near the dungeon and get the bonuses again.
Simple, they play a single player game that has no pvp elements. And does not effect anyone. So many cheaters play this game, how can they sleep at night?.
How you sleep at night however... that is beond me ;)

This is a game that punishes you for entering a biome before you are truly ready to tackle them. You really need to max out your equipment as much as you can before entering a new biome or the game will kill you. It's that brutal.
And you *can* complete all 5 bosses solo. How to do so might not be obvious at first, but it's just a matter of studying your environment, what effects your weapons make on certain enemies, and learning how the world works.
....And persistence in the face of constant failure and frustration, because this game has plenty of that. Persistence will always get you over the line.

All spawners can be shot and destroyed by bow and arrow from afar.
If you have trouble with melee enemies, you can use the polearm weapons (not spear but Atgeir) and use its secondairy attack to swing it around you and knock enemies back.
Works decently well near spawners as well, pushing enemies back while hitting the spawner.
Never rush into rooms of dungeons, go back to the beginning if you have to, and you can always leave the dungeon when things get too hard.
If you leave a cave or dungeon, the enemy will get disinterested and walk back after a while. You can see if you still have agro from an enemy in a crypt/dungeon/cave, by crouching down. (stealth) you can see the ''spotted'' eye close when enemies lose interest, some time after that they start moving around again, going back to the place they were.
Giving you the much needed time to heal up and jump back into the dungeon.
If you have debuffs like being wet, or lost your rested buff (that gives stamina and health regen), you can always build a campfire near the dungeon and get the bonuses again.
Hope this helps, dont listen to those people that are hurt by you using cheats, if that is your way of enjoying the game power to you.

Kinda have to agree with this. You have to try overcome obstacles. There are few instances where the situation is hopeless but when first playing it can seem there is now way out. Playing the game with infinte stamina isn't going to teach you how to approach situations properly. If you know you can only get one combo off before you need to recover then you'll put yourself in a safer position. If your just swinging like crazy cause you have nothing telling you to back off and play it safe then you'll find your self in unsurvivable situations regardless. Maybe turn off all cheats first before I even begin to explain anything that you might find relatable or useful. How can I even explain any challenges that you have to overcome if you cheat? I'll tell you now, that Valheim is a survival game first, and action second. If you don't like surviving, don't play Valheim! Or just install mods that enable full creative mode and just build with 0 difficulty problems.

Don't tank your way through the crypts. Shoot through a hole or use the stagbreaker.

Before entering rooms use stag breaker as it does AOE and damage carries through doors and what not. Later there will be sledge. It helps to weaken stuff and can kill stuff closest.

390 hrs played ( 90% solo ) so I know how to play the game. I entered my first swamp crypt after the last update and got slaughtered in the first room. I'm done until there are more updates that balance the game properly.

probably.
stamina should be fine with 1 high stamina food and 2 health foods. Be rested, warm, and dry as much as possible (a struggle in the swamp).
elder is just a move and shoot, you can do it naked, but its better to have some defense in case you get hit.
swamp crypt: by the time you clear to a room with body piles you should have found some iron. you can hear the body pile rooms, and avoid them -- buzzing fly noise. Avoid them until you have enough iron to make a weapon and maybe a bit of the armor as well. When you do have the gear for body piles, ignore the enemy and focus the body pile until it is gone then clean up the bad guys.
many people cheese the crypts by shooting enemy a bit before opening access to melee.
The game is tough. Iron is a game changer, but its still a hard game and you have to take it slow, be prepared, be willing to run away to heal. Use terrain and corridors and such to your advantage. Dodge/avoid being hit as much as you can -- armor is nice, but not being hit at all is always better.

Kill the body piles first, and there is always a mudpile between you and the room with draugrs dont hack everything away... then use bow, and ohh yes.. build a outpost in Swamps with bed and fire :)

With your shield do you block ?
Do you have anti-poison potion ? It's very usefull when encountering blobs in the crypts.
In a crypt, when cleaning up a mudpile, I do not clear it completely. I leave just enough mud to barr the way but I can see what I will be up to and I can fire some arrows. Then I clean the mud and enter the room.

I'll agree with to others in dealing with body piles first, I've cleared six crypts so far, all in troll as upgraded as I can get it, with bronze sword and buckler (sword upgraded to iron after first two, buckler remains unchanged). The parry stagger helped me greatly in buying enough time to focus on the pile, but killed the mob if it's between me and the pile, and destroy it before another spawns.
Another note, I believe that they will only spawn as long as you are within a certain radius, so if more that two spawn or you get low health, run away several rooms if not out of the crypt. The enemies will follow you if you remain inside, but you can move to a better position to take them out without anymore joining in, then recover yourself as needed; before trying again the destroy the pile.

a tip (or little exploit if you wish):
in sunken crypts when digging don't dig everything. lean a bit to the side. this will prevent mobs from reaching you and you can shoot them from a safe distance.
i usually go into the crypt in troll4 (which is equal to bronze 3 armor) and have no trouble surviving. as long as i don't forget my food. but try to upgrade your shield\armor asap. it'll make your life much easier.
