Astroneer or Valheim

Same price steam sale, one is 1.0 with updates and the other alpha, so iam looking 1 of this game , i cant decide yet so maybe the comunity can help me. I play solo probably 1 or 2 friends will join me on any of the 2 games but most of the time i will be playing alone.

Astroneer

haven't played Astroneer but its a finished game in full release.

Valheim is still unfinished and evolving. As it is currently at version .2 I'd say even the devs think it has a ways to go before 1.0.

What the game is today will likely not be what the game is when it finally hits 1.0. Right now every update introduces new bugs, backward compatability issues, plus complaints and flame wars about the changes made. Too much drama.

I recommend just putting Valheim on your wishlist and checking back every six to nine months or so and see how it's developing.

/my 2 cents

I can vouch for that game. When it first came out I thought I didn't need an even cutesier Minecraft and expected that the transition to 2D would only serve to make the game more limiting. But a friend bought it for me so I tried it and I found that it was really its own thing with different areas of emphasis. The 2D turned out to be a strength if anything, in that it would take the devs less time to inject fresh and polished content.

You can do a lot of building but the underground exploration was where it really shone. Both weapons and enemies had diverse characteristics. Platforming gave you a lot of freedom to express your skill and creativity. Bosses battles were not all a walk in the park. Also an impressive progression system that meaningfully transformed the world around you. It's like they finished making the game and then over time they patched in two more sequels for free.

The thing I love the most is that it is a long game for all the right reasons. It doesn't tuck a major grind in between every milestone, it doesn't need to. Instead of being designed to maximise the time you spend staring at every little rock texture, it just has a huge abundance of well-considered content.

No contest. Almost 500 hrs in and it never gets old.
Great solo or with a group of people.

Well Re-Logic have made a ten year career out of supporting it, the last new content was November 2021 and it's inspired a fair few clones. It's one of those *important* games.

Another difference between Astroneer and Valheim is that Astroneer had a tragic loss of lead developers early on and is now being developed as a mobile-like game funded by gem shop costume sales, while Valheim is still with its founding crew. This puts Astroneer in the lead for both completion and ongoing development speed, but to me Valheim has a much clearer vision of what it wants to be. (While at the same time being far more accessible for modding - there are maybe 40 mods for Astroneer in total.)

Well.. lets just say I only bought this game because I saw someone here saying "Valheim is like terraria in 3d". That one sentence sold the game for me. So yes. It's really good. And the modded content...:praisesun: top notch stuff. Content for thousand of hours, one of the few games I have on nearly every single platform there is.. twice.

Yes ofc has the usual 2d limitations in gameplay. But it's fun. Really fun even for todays standards. And no it's also not only for children or something because I know people that avoid it only because they think it is.

Very different 'skill' levels, imho. Astroneer is a game that got 3/4 finished, something happened to the lead guy, and it's kinda in stasis since then. It's definitely G rated, and has some basic environmental dangers but that's about it. It's designed to play with your kids. I don't hold much hope for major updates for this game.

Valheim is much more of an effort. Theoretically, Valheim has a ton of potential (long list of things to get to 1.0). The world is much, much more dangerous. Progression is key, and building is custom.. but frankly kinda limited (and fairly idiosyncratic). It's designed to be solo or with your friends. It can be played casually, but generally it tends toward "serious" gamer. I do think they'll be making updates for a while, but it's not gonna be anytime soon. Previous updates have taken ages...

I have MANY hours in both. I'd say get both. But if you put a gun to my head and said I could only play one or the other, it would be without a doubt...

Valheim.

Both are enjoyable in their own ways, but also function a bit different. In Valheim you'll likely being leveling up RPG style and building Minecraft style. You can't do either in Astroneer, as you have pre-defined structures that you just plop down. It's like a Factorio Super Lite. Though both are just as relaxing, and Astroneer doesn't really have bosses, or any enemies. It's more about exploring and the journey. Worst thing you'll find is stinky plants. Still fun, though. I'd probably say Valheim, but Astroneer is worth at least one playthrough.

Well, they're quite different games. I only got Astroneer because my older brother thought it was an interesting game, even though on the inside it was way out of my age group at the time. It is a good game, don't get me wrong, and I come back to it now and then to simply chill and enjoy the clean aesthetics, and developers provide occassional events to give players something to do after the core objective is complete, together with updates.

It's just a pretty "child-safe" game, so for someone past the school phase I'd rather recommend something more serious like Satisfactory or Stationeers, that are more challenging and intricate. If that's not even a consideration for you, and your co-op mates are positive about it, then there's nothing for me to say against Astroneer.

Valheim is more on the challenging side of things. It has very well-placed balancing both for solo and co-op, it is also well designed and looks great despite low-end models and textures, and it has features that appeal to builders, fighters and explorers alike. It is EA game, which means it can help some work, like zverozvero have said, but it is arguably a solid game already and an investment into a game that it eventually will become.

So in general, if you want something to chill, and the aethetic suits your taste, pick Astroneer. If you want something more challenging with a more long-term value, pick Valheim. The choice is ultimately yours.

Valheim is doable solo but playing in team consistently lifts alot of grind that otherwise would pile or force to skip as much on the way up tech tree. And off course - early access things like mechanics that need alot of polish (combat/mobs behaviour for example) or areas waiting to be impemented or filled with content. Recent news speak of caves (dungeons) for mountains going through tests but still weeks from being ready for main branch if i got it right.
Can say anything about Astroneer cause never tried or heared about it.
'When in doubt - take game in 1.0' is reliable way to pick but if its more about appealing aestetics and beardmen in helmets caught you eye Vallheim does viking thing quite well. Building and decorating base (at least wooden and iron elements) works well and looks good.
