Why are Light Armor Users Punished?

I just gotta vent this out. I'm a light armor user and have been trying to complete the Fenris Armor set.

I've been grinding for 14-ish hours for the last THREE days trying to slay enough cultists so that one of them drops a trophy. I'm killing them in Frost Caves for the most part and have cleared EIGHT frost Caves thus far... EIGHT. It's getting to the point now I'm about ready to just skip the Fenris head piece and stay with Root or make the sacrifice and go heavy.

What seriously irritates me about this is that the heavy armor path is *guaranteed* while the light armor path is plagued with intense grinding. Yes, I hear some people find the trophy in the first one or two caves they find, but I see even more posts echoing a sentiment similar to mine. For the equivalent tier heavy armor, I equip the wishbone, spend 30-40 minutes mining some silver and viola! Full heavy armor set in about 1 - 1.5 hours (assuming you also need to sail it home). In comparison, I've spent *at least* 42 hours (over the last 3 or so days) clearing cave after cave to gather the necessary Fenris hairs and hope for a trophy.

Why is the path of light armor so much more of a grind than heavy armor? Why are light armor users punished when light armor is a more challenging path to walk?

The currently available light armor sets are considerably more useful than their heavy armor counterparts available in the same biome. Damage resistances are very useful when put to use in correct situations, and the skill bonuses can be very helpful as well. Heavy armor is just armor; it's supposed to be reliable.

As for whether you find the metal processing or frost cave exploration more satisfying activity, that's a matter of opinion. I really appreciated the break in monotony mining for iron, iron and... some more iron, but I must say I didn't enjoy the material drain of upgrading the Fenris set either, especially since I had already explored the nearby larger mountain regions on my world before the update which introduced frost caves.

Fenris set remains viable even in mistlands, thanks to its mobility boost. Wolf armor not so much. Equipping root harnesk, light armor from the previous biome swamp, is probably a better bet in mistlands and plains than the wolf coat.

Everyone has their own time and decides how to use it.

I have not heard of any player-carried equipment increasing amount of loot yielded, sounds like a myth to me.

However, have you noticed that fenris hair can be gathered from the "wall clothes" as well? They are often found around the shrine rooms but also in other places. Sometimes they hide items behind them in hallways. I use thrown spear to take the elevated ones down quickly.

Lol k . Damn wish I had that much free time again.

This whole playthrough of Valheim started with a 72 hour lan. I made it 64 hours but ended up crashing out. The next runner up was around 50. it definitely wasn't planned that way (we were planning to LAN the weekend but like normal humans) but the Valheim bug bit us and we kept going and going and going.

But yeah, from the more negative responses, Eight trophy-less caves is unusual so I'll just keep on keeping on.

Yeah, he was effing with me w/r/t getting more trophies. As for the Fenris hair, I'm alright with having to grind that out. Some areas only have the 1-2 pieces on the wall or pedestal. Others have a few locks hanging as an extra treat. Yay.

What really gets my goat is that I have fair luck with getting cultist spawns. I get roughly 2-4 per dungeon (some i get zero but very rarely). So after killing between 16 - 24 of these guys, I'm ready for a freaking trophy so I can finish the headpiece, you know? I've been able to fully upgrade the chest and leg pieces from all the Fenris hair I've found while grinding for these effing cultists :-(

I replied to this before but I guess it didn't post.

You have a great point about the resistance bonuses on light armor. On my way to Fenris I cobbled together pieces that brought me 10-15 points higher than my root armor set, but suddenly I started getting chunked by Deathsquitos where they were a non-issue with Root. From that angle, I can definitely appreciate Root / Fenris requiring more of a grind than heavy armor.

I've been hunting for Sea Serpent trophy & a cave containing Tetra, for a lot longer than 3 days & 42 hours, but you don't see me authoring a forum thread to vent my frustration. I save that for others, then post in their threads ...

I have no dog in this conversation but I can easily play 14+ hours a day and have.. I'm 42.. work from home and can usually play a few hours a day while I'm working lol. I had about 90 hours in the first week of launch.. 12-13 hours a day.

I will say I've also cleared 8 or 9 caves.. was considering the fenris set and also have not gotten a cultist trophy so I just made the wolf armor..

RNG is RNG and it sucks if you find yourself at the lower end. No need for exageration. Even a child can understand that.

Was it 14 hours over three days or 42 hours? Your exaggerated fabrication is a mess. I get your upset because RNG was not on your side this time... but come on.

Have you been carrying the knife for added rate of trophy drop? It kills without damaging too much and increases the trophy drop rate.

There is no fabrication. 14 hours a day over 3 days. Eight Frost Caverns. Why do you find this to be such an exaggeration? I've had to sail through 3 continents to find mountain biomes large enough to spawn Frost Caverns, search for and find said Caverns, clear said caverns, and include multiple deaths along the way.

Is it the amount of time or the sheer number of Frost Caverns you find to be an exaggeration?
