Just learn to sail. Don't go directly into the wind. Go zigzag always just outside the nogo zone. It's way faster than paddling straight into the wind.

Edit: That's presuming a longboat, which is definitely faster to tack.

Great, so every 20 minutes I'll get to have a tailwind for 5 minutes then it'll change to a headwind for the next 15 minutes so I'll still take an eternity to get anywhere.
