It's not this game that's causing your overheating. If your box is overheating running Valheim then it will also be overheating generally.

To be fair:
For him it might be just Valheim.

I mean for all we know the only other game he plays is Minesweeper. xD

Some RTX cards are reporting issues like this. Try to run in Vulkan rendering mode, that seems to be helping some people.

Other than that, cap frames, lower settings... clean PC etc.

That has a *very* temporary solution feel to it.

Does the same to me. It isn't this game it is Unity and the card we have - mine is a 580x, settings all medium.

Good approach. My cooling is ok. I have SAPPHIRE PULSE Radeon RX 580 8GB GDDR5. It runs cool in many other games. But when I start valheim all the hell breaks loose.. Even though I love this game, I don't want to risk my PC. I will try vulkan, if it's not getting better, I will let it go.

What GPU do you have?
Drivers up to date?
It's almost summer (at least over here), could have something to do with it, see if your computer is getting enough fresh air.
Fan doing okay?, not enough dust blocking it?
There could be a hundred reasons, but overheating is normally not a problem for this game.

Generally if somebody's hardware is overheating, that indicates a PC issue. A GPU should be able to run fine at 100%, if it's not then there may be a cooling issue, or dust, or overclock settings, or bitcoin mining, or a number of other things that are not the game.

This. A properly build and maintained PC at room temperature can run all processes at 100% indefinitely without overheating.

dust off your GPU. most GPUs are built to run far below 95°C, but some ("blower-style") do get hot. now add dust to (possibly) an already weak cooling system and you've got a fried GPU. overheating because of dust build-up is a common cause for component death, so beware.

if you feel adventurous, then look into repasting your GPU, it might be worth it every few years. if you do that though, mind the thermal pads for memory. get replacements that are the right height within 0.5mm!
