Will we need to start again for the last two biomes?
If we avoid going to the far north/far south, will the updates that bring the last two biomes require starting a new map for them to generate?

What I have been doing, mostly, for every new biome update is hopping into another world. I got tired of searching my main world with the base I have put hundreds of hours into, only to find nothing there. I found the Mistlands so, so long ago and build a little outpost there hoping the area would update. All I got were a couple seekers that immediately came and destroyed most of my outpost, almost stranding me there. It is more fun finding another world and going to get the materials I need there. Oh, and I also despise sailing against the wind for hours, upon hours.

An option would be to reset your world to an "unexplored" state with a mod. This would let you preserve you homesteads and other locals that you want to save while wtill getting the new content.
I've used the UpgradeWorld mod to good effect. I'm still playing on my original world from 2 years ago but with the new content as it gets added. Also helps clean up the mine pits from all teh copper and Silver I farmed working up the tech tree.

Just be sure to back up your world before using. I've never had a problem but better safe than sorry.
Good luck

Probably. I mean, let's be realistic, not only is this game early access, but a huge portion of its resources are finite. It seems as if staying on the same world long term was just not what it's designed for and only works at all due to tediously logging in holding things you acquired in other worlds. I wouldn't get too attached to them.

"An important thing to note is that the Mistlands biome will only generate in areas you have not yet discovered. Therefore, if you have explored a lot of your world, you might be better off starting a new one in order to actually be able to travel to the Mistlands."
This is from the patch notes for Mistlands. I would assume the same logic would apply for the next 2 biomes. You've got about 9-12 months before you gotta worry about it.. but I doubt anyone here is going to know for certain.

Disadvantage to that, with the release of Mistlands, lots of old maps because obsolete because the spawn moved. As well as some of the island parts. And occasionally the location of some bosses.
When we got tar pits and frostcaves, it messed up mountains and plains for some players.
So my advise to the OP:
Start two worlds with the same seed.
Use one world to build that awe inspiring base you always wanted to build.
Use the other world to hunt for the bosses and unlock all building materials and the items you can build with them.
That way, if you do have to start over, you won't loose much at your "hunting seed", while at your building seed anything is still there.
