It kinda depends for me, sometimes I would just time the swing to right before they will hit u, or as others are saying, if u dont aggro them, just shoot one arrow and they die. ez :) Middling level. Atgeir secondary or sledge vs deathsquitos?

If you're running from the deathsquitos with your sword and shield out hit R it will put the shield and sword on your back. Deathsquitos will hit the shield as you're running away.
I'm not aware that a shield does anything if you're not touching the block button. I am unable to find any reference that backs up the claim that a shield will protect you from rear attacks. Are you running a mod to allow this?
Counterintuitively, running away from a deathsquito is the worst thing you can do once it is aggroed. They move faster than you, fly over terrain, and running will only drain your stamina. It is better to stand your ground. Nearly any weapon will one-shot a deathsquito; you simply need good aim (bow), good timing, or a parry.

Sword is fine , knife ? That thing have no range to hit first the squito a knife or sword, deathsquito will only attack you for 1 second before running back, a slow weapon like hammer will be your demise
And hamer is slow if you dont see enemy comming , but their AoE range cant hit bugs with almost non prep

Neither should be your first choice for hitting skeeters. If you see them before you aggro them, a wooden arrow from any bow will do the job. If you see them rush you or hear the whine, a parry with a decent shield will stop them for a moment to get a free slap with a one-handed weapon.
This!
also, what kind of armor are you wearing into the Plains? Good armor (and HP) will stop a hit or two. Maxed iron...maybe. Maxed silver...probably. Maxed Padded (with Black metal weapons)... definitely!

The new root armor would protect against deathsquitos since it gives a resistance to pierce and poison. I've not yet tested it but would assume such. Not so good for fire wielding fulings though.

I would classify the new Root Armor as medium armor, which should hopefully please those people clamoring for additional light armor options (past Troll Armor). Apart from Surtlings, there are no enemies in the swamp or mountain biomes able to take advantage of the fire vulnerability. I would not consider wearing the Root Armor into the plains or beyond; I expect the armor value won't hold up and Yagluth would annhiliate you.

Atgeir primary attack — poke them before they poke you.

Use them only if you are in the middle of a mob rush. Otherwise bow at a distance, shield as they approach (block or parry) step forward, then favorite melee weapon. Or if your timing is already good, swing as they first approach.
I don't usually waste stamina if it ain't necessary.
