Valheim has the best building mechanics of the crafting games I've played, especially when compared to something like Ark: Survival Evolved. It would benefit from integrating the Precise Rotation mod and the Build Camera mod. It could also a few other changes, such as being able to tunnel into mountains and being able to dive into water. Of course more build pieces are always good.

For the record the only games available in the 80s none were a builder type game. The closest was SimCity and it was god awful with graphics. The best games in the 80s were on Ninetendo and Atari 5200. The PC games were centered around SimCity, Ceasar, and a few space games where you could fly a ship that was basically just lines on a screen.

Valheim is not the best graphic wise, but it is legendary when compared to the 80s and even into the mid 90s. You would have to go to Late 90s and early 2000's to get something comparable.

and before that i busted out on my colecovision with the expansion module, also had the steering wheel and foot pedals, in the 80's, god those were good times, wish i still had it :/

easily the best and most free base building games, easily. the freedom to build and manipulate terrain anywhere is worth the game price. everything else is a bonus.

Actually building something isn't too bad, I never get the pieces right in order to get a good looking structure but I don't care so much about that as I do flat land.

Stamina could be better that's for sure.

Building in Valheim is just about right, it blends pretty seamlessly together with the rest of the game. The only other game I know of that can replicate some of the creativity potential together with gameplay is none other than Sims 4, but I think we all know how much more simplistic the gameplay there is. I've played some other survival crafting games like Conan Exiles or the Forest, and they don't come even close. Feel free to name drop any others?

Yeah, no, the building is ok but that's it, not many parts, clipping issues, tedious placement and so on

The building is quite good. Of all the survival building games, there isn't really a great building mechanic one out there. Valheim has some very easy to use/understand building mechanics and it isn't overly picky about everything being in a grid. Valheim building isn't perfect, but the ease of which you can create something unique and massive is one of the best parts of this game. My girlfriend loves the building aspect of this game, even more than any other component. Many of the annoying parts of building (water de-equipping hammer, etc) can be fixed with simple mods.

What game(s) are people thinking of as being so superior for building when ragging on this game? What game has perfect building mechanics? I love building games so I'm genuinely curious.

Even in 'creative mode' with god mode, I still have to eat 3 high stamina foods and type 'heal' into console every 30 seconds when I'm trying to make a large flat area.

Idk how its one of the best base builders since the building in this game is the most tedious part considering how grindy it is to build a decent shed. And on top of that, it does have very limited options for wood and stone pieces (except if using mods), and all storage looks identical (boxes).
Sure you can create some really neat stuff, but that's mostly using devcommands or grinding for hundreds of hours.

I've seen some amazing builds, for what i want i think it hits the money, don't know what sort of set pieces you'd want with what you have, cornered flooring, more sizes maybe, but they do intersect well enough that i can create the angles.
(not that i would ever complain about more, which i am sure we get)

the forest has great versatility, good depth and detail. traps ftw, but still limiting.

and Valhiem has by far the best snapping i have seen

Well, if you have searched how a fantasy/norse home/base would look you ll understand. More angles and wood tiers maybe. Also those amazing builds are built using devcommands (cheats) or mods as i said.

nah, i know ppl that stick to the game and build great stuff.
it's about what you can pull of with what is in front of you, not command it, anyone can do that.
