Place 2m wood beams along the floor surrounding the fire "pit", as well as along the bottom of the "chimney"... once you have those, you can't walk into the fire.

This also makes it so the smoke cannot go anywhere but upward (can't go into the house due to the opening being too small for the smoke particles to pass through)

If the meat falls in the fire, simply step forward and get as close as you need to since you are blocked from going into the fire or getting burned.

Have you checked you have enough room in your inventory for both the raw and cooked meat? :)

2 possibilities.

1. You don't have auto gather turned on ("V" key) and it drops on the floor.
2. You are far enough away that when it drops to the floor it rolls away from you and out of auto gather range.

In either case look for sparkles on the floor.

Well I am standing right next to the cooking station and I think auto gather is on, because everything esle automatically lands in my inventory. I'll try an other cooking position, see if that helps.

then you should be able to grab cooked meat

I have setup a new campfire and cooking station at the same spot and it is working so far. So thats good :)

I used to frequently have the same problem. Also I had a habit of actually walking into the fire when approaching a wooden cooking station.

I discovered that the grilled meat was dropping, not onto the floor, but into the fire. (So that is why I end up with coal in my fire!) This is how I fixed it.

A campfire must be built on a 2 by 2 meter square of bare ground or a 2 by 2 meter stone floor piece. Outline that 2 by 2 meter square with horizontal wood beams resting on the ground. One go right up to the fire, as long as one is not sprinting, and one will stop when one's feet strike the horizontal wood beam.

Can't set oneself on fire by walking into the fire. And one is close enough for auto-pickup to function perfectly when removing meat from the cooking station(s) on the fire.

Please note that when one progresses far enough to build an iron cooking station, one must approach it so that one is close to the center of it's 4 meter length. If one is too close to one end or the other, meat at the far end may still fall into the fire when removed.

Sometimes if you are too close it can shoot through you and end up behind you on the ground.
