Upgradeable boats?

I'm starting to get the scope of this game... and i'm seeing myself playing like a viking version of the trucking simulator games. I have a absolutely giant map and I want to make an epic base at my starting location, but i have to sail like 5+ minutes each way. Is this seriously the only way in vanilla valheim to get metal to my base?

Making multiple trips back and forth to transport metals may SEEM like the way to do it, since you spent time building a base (presumably in the Meadows), and setting up a workshop there, but.... That's actually the long way...

Exactly.

I don't understand where all these players get the "One Base to Rule them All" and think you've got to travel back and forth to/from it all the time for everything. I play mostly with no portals at all anymore, or at the very least house rules that limit placement/number/etc. [The main use for portals for me is to change forsaken powers.]

Although I have said this a few times, it bears repeating. When I start the game over on a new map seed, I will not build my HQ on the continent upon which I spawn.

My son and I built a huge castle not far from the pillars spawn-point. We quickly ran out of access to sources of ore on that continent. A couple of weeks later we found a nearby continent to the southeast, that not only had access to large tracts of meadow, forest, swamp, mountain and plains, it also had lots of iron & silver. If we had built our main HQ there we would have spent a hecuva lot less time shipping ore for refining. After repurposing a Troll Cave into a portal room, I found a very large semi-abandoned Draugr Village in meadow bordered by Black Forest with nearby swamp, plains & mountain. I restored all the buildings and built vegetable and animal farms, workshops, smelters, surrounding it all with an earthen wall. Due to the fact that I did a minimal amount of terrain alteration: only using a hoe to level a few mounds in the gardens; my son experiences no lag and FPS loss.
FPS loss plagued us at our original HQ because of the large amount of earth levelling done there combined with the large scale of the stone castle and building construction.

To avoid spending a lot of time transporting raw ore for refining, I recommend thoroughly exploring nearby land masses before devoting a lot of time and effort into major base construction.

cheers,

The amount of metal you can hold on even a Karve is quite a bit (120 for the K). I tend to set up a 'mining' operation on site and stay there until I have a full cargo hold.

Only then do I make the trip back and so it does not seem so bad at all.

Now if I was going back and forth each time for one stack of ore then yes, could see the potential frustration.

What type of ship are you sailing? It's going to take you WAY more than 10 minutes to fill a longship with ore or refined metal. I don't see how the ship and/or travel time is even comparable to the time to mine it.

Um.... sailing was a HUGE part of being a viking.

I was playing Super Mario Bros on the NES, and I was like why do I have to run all the way to the end of each level (grindy). Then I found the portal room(s). And I was like why can i only portal to certain levels. It was tragic.

Making multiple trips back and forth to transport metals may SEEM like the way to do it, since you spent time building a base (presumably in the Meadows), and setting up a workshop there, but.... That's actually the long way...

ALL building parts and work stations can be broken down for free and with a full refund of all materials (you lose nothing), so the way I approach this is...

I carry materials for making a portal when i go out to explore... Before leaving my base I place down a un-named portal (default), so while I'm out in the world and I find a good spot for mining , I drop the portal which links back to my base...

I build a small outpost and set up some protection then portal home and pick up my coal kiln and workbench and smelter, all of which CAN travel through the portal, and bring all those items to my outpost (near my mining operation).

Instead of bringing all the metal to some far-away workshop, bring your workshop to the metal and process it there. Once you have gathered enough ingots etc, you can even build a forge which will allow you to actually craft the items you are gathering the metal for in the first place.... right at the source.... Once you have crafted the metal into items (tools/weapons etc.) they are no longer restricted from going through the portal.

Using this method there is no need for "world hopping" or using mods, and after you have exhausted your mining site you can pick it all up and relocate it somewhere else with no loss of materials.

MUCH faster and easier and gets the job done without immersion-breaking workarounds like using multiple worlds.

Correct. The devs want you to explore and travel as the Vikings did to truly appreciate the metals you've collected.

Some people use mods to allow portal use w/ metals, the rest do it as the devs want. Either play style is your choice.

No. If you have no moral objections you can create a second seed world with yet another base. You can then logoff and logon between seeds and transport metals between them. Another option is to download the Valheim+ mod and disable transport blocks. On the other extreme are players who don't enable teleporters or maps at all and do everything by land and sea. You paid for the game. Enjoy it as you see fit. Skaal!

the sail is the fastest part of aquiring metals, it really isnt that bad, even if you dislike sailing

Viking mariners did have a primitive compass and actually understood magnetic declination. They also had an hourglass and obviously did a lot of navigation based on observations of Polaris and Sirius. I would like to see either of these Viking technologies offered by the Trader in an upcoming release. Currently I use the Valheim+ mod simply to get the clock and flip on my wolf cape around 18:00 while at sea.

The trader wouldn't be a good place for navigation aids, cause one of the consequences of nomap is there's a good chance you never see the trader...

But to go back to the OP, what boat are you using at the moment? The longboat, while you still need to do the whole sailing thing, can hold a massive amount without any penalty. I just moved house, and after portalling most of my stuff loaded all the metal in my base into the longboat and at 2600 weight it was barely half full. Getting off the beach at the other end was "interesting" though...

So while you may need to travel a while, each trip can carry a *lot*
