Not being able to craft a fishing pole at the start of the game is kinda daft, some seeds you can easily finish all 5 bosses before you find the merchant.

I have to say, hiding the fishing pole behind the merchant isnt a design decision I support.
by the time you get it, you can craft better food. and by the time you can cook it, you also ahve better food.
grilled fish would be a perfect starter food along grilled meat and neck tail.
also I definitly tihnk it should be possible to hit them or spear them.

you really need to jump on the ones that are close to shore, in a place where you can still use attacks and that the water doesn't go above your waist.

Then quickly punch them out, you gotta have the timing right, since the buggers are quite guick to get away

If you managed to hit them, one hit should do the trick.

I do agree that it is silly that you cannot use spears or bow+arrows to hit them.

But thats just how it is.
