Single Player

I want to start a single player game based on just building stuff and seeing what I can create. I created a world and did not select start server and started the game, yet it seems that isn't single player mode. trying to use the console to generate resources so I can build and doing that does not bring up the menu when I hit F5. How do I get it into single player mode?

It is long and lonely but also relaxing and pretty. If you are the kind of person who has the will to make cool architecture when nobody else will ever see it, a lot of fun can be had.

Highly enjoyable, imho. I have played the game both in co-op and solo and to be honest, I find the solo experience somehow more fitting and more rewarding. However, going it solo does mean that resource gathering can get a bit of a chore, especially if you want to build something big. That said, the feeling of achievement is also greater if you have to work harder for it.

Screenshots are a thing, though. :-)

Of course this shouldn't even need to said, but I find uploading my creations into a vacuum doesn't quite hit the mark for me.

Immersive and relaxing for me. I just explore and learn. If you are into leveling and skilling you won't enjoy it. Look at the complaints people make as well as the positives. I enjoy this game for all the reasons others hate it.

if you like a decent grind game, like i do, valheim is a nice game. there is no rush to progress. game can be difficult and frustrating but that's just part of the grind.

peaceful.
you can do just about anything at your own pace, next to no pressure to do stuff in a hurry.
unlike other survival games, you won't die from starvation/dehydration etc.
it's very easy going, and most of the challenge only comes if you choose to face it.

some of the things are trickier due to you being the only target of the enemies, but with practice and patience it is manageable.

Fun, challenging, a little grindy at times. The mobs scale so you won't be overwhelmed.

There is no "story" so its kind of peaceful / zen / solitary experiance which is nice, but also things try really hard to kill you at times which gives this mix not everyone will enjoy.

It can be played in various ways and speeds, solo makes it easier to pick a right pace.
I play mainly with friends but sometimes they are not there and its still fun solo.

One advice, dont be afraid to die early, it will save you trouble later. The game throws you some curveballs at the start of new biomes. And if all else fails, you can call up on recovery squad here or whatever other forums, people are generally helpful.

In the end there is nothing solo cant do easily, rather the learning experiances are tougher whout a wingman to get you out of touble.

Have only played solo. Now with blood magic I get a little taste of coop play when I can spawn in Sven and Ole from time to time.

There are different ways to play the game; one might even say there are different games within the game.

A purist's position might be that one can accept hints from Hugin the Raven but must figure everything else out for him or herself. No looking up videos online, no consulting the Valheim wiki, no watching youtube videos. Progress through the game, kill all the bosses, complete Odin's mission as he intended. No console, no devcommands. If SwampDragon does not completely agree with this approach he's not that far off. Neither am I. If Odin wanted you to use the console and devcommands to defeat his enemies, he would have made you a god.

I don't think Pain is Weakness is interested in using the console or devcommands to accomplish Odin's mission. I think he wants to play two games, one in which he completes Odin's mission without using the console and a separate game in which he wants to see what kind of elaborate buildings, bridges, docks, etc. he can construct. I personally don't have any problem with that.

Hit the nail on the head.

single player on a multi player server, you would 'start' the server and it would run whether you were in the game playing or not. I do not know how that behaves, though, with only one player it seems like all that would happen is time passing, maybe crops and such grow but unclear if monsters attack the homes / etc when no one around (I think not).

even if playing single on a multi player server, no one can log in without your password and possibly an IP address or something.

Or, in short, do not start the server at all in single player is probably the best bet unless you want to grow something offline or something.

Even on a multiplayer server, if no one is logged in nothing happens, time does not pass, crops do not grow, torches and fires do not burn out, and mobs do not attack.

Nothing happens in Valheim unless your character is around.

Yea I play a lot of different survival games like this. I will usually have a main save that progresses through regularly then a creative type save to create stuff with and if I really like what I create in there then I'll go to my regular save and farm the resources needed to build it there. Thank you

Yea it is just to be able to build a lot of stuff, kinda like a creative save and I'll have a regular save that won't have any cheats that I'll actually progress through regularly.

Single player is just a server for one.

Have you enabled the console? It was changed a few weeks ago from the original release setup. Can't tell you the steps but I know it's pretty simple...Google or probably someone will be along to tell you how.

From the Steam client, go to the Library, right click on Valheim, and select "Properties".

At the bottom of the "General" tab is a section named "Launch Options". Add "-console" (without quotes) in the textbox here, then close the Properties window.

You will now be able to bring up the console with F5.
