You need certain types of structures to block spawns. Torches fires and workbenches being the main ones.

You notice the radius a work bench has when you place one? nothing will spawn inside that but they could in any small gap of coverage.

A wards a good large area cover as well consider a few of those strategically place and see how you get on.

also, if you build on a beach, it's impossible to completely wall yourself off from the outside because creatures can swim around any structure you put up.

This was my first mistake, I fixed it.
But in this topic there was a question about spawning monsters inside a full fence.
