So.. what actually dictates wave height at the shoreline?

I've noticed that it can be completely random, and I can't see any rhyme or reason to how the waves act during storms.

I've got a fair few little ports/outposts all over the place on both of my saves/servers and I can't see a pattern. Sometimes on the same tiny stretch of coast the waves can be hitting the shoreline really high at one part but a 5 second jog away they don't cause much height change at all, even in the most severe of storms.

A prime example is the first base we built at the meadows - We chose that location because it had a really nice little inlet that was almost completely sealed in, so our own private little pond. The waves get pretty high inside there during a storm. When we upgraded to longboats I built a port going out into the water along a far more exposed stretch of coast with a steeper falloff in the height, but the boat barely rocks during a storm.

Yet, at the next place we really set up, we had a similar little pond to park our karve in and it's still as anything in all weather and the shore is absolutely battered by waves.

Anyone got some insight into this? Would be nice to be able to nail down the parameters for the next big base spot I pick.

Gotcha, cheers for the reply. I guess I've just been lucky that the tidal map is bad at some of our spots and I'll have to keep an eye out during storms.

The waves seem to swell highest over deep water, so if your base has deep water right next to it, then the waves will be higher.

It is my understanding that the game creates a 'tidal map' to match the outlines of islands and the way the ground is shaped on both sides of the shoreline, and that it's just not very good at doing so.
Probably best to wait for a storm on site to check if it is suitable for a harbor.

I have a small base on a tiny Peninsula where during a storm waves may come crashing through 10m above normal sea Level, it really is a mess at times :steamsad:
