Alternative to torches

Is there an alternative to the torches that you can craft (I've never found the merchant dude) or just a way to make torches better?

It's likely too close to the ceiling. Without enough clearance they go out. Place it lower, wait to make sure it stays lit before adding additional resin because you lose all the resin if you deconstruct it.

On a side note, about finding the merchant. In my game, a treasure sack appeared on the map, far outside the explored area. I believe I had seen a runic inscription somewhere that displayed the merchant's location on the map. In either case - look around. And check your map from time to time to see if a sack has appeared showing his location.

If you place the sconce too high, the roof, or whatever is immediately above it will absorb the flame and it will appear to be out. Make sure it has adequate vertical clearance.

You really want to find the merchant. The head lamp is ok, but the belt that adds 150 to carry weight is a huge QOL improvement when you start iron mining.

Fire arrows work for me. Fire one into the roof of a room as needed...or tree or even the ground...

Are you talking hand torches or structure ones?

For hand torches the trader has basically a head flashlight. You can't wear it and a helmet at the same time so that's the tradeoff.

For structures metal torches are much more efficient and burn much longer per resin, and eventually coal brazers are even better.

You can toss glowing mushrooms on the ground for some illumination.

item stands with : Frost potion, stamina potion, fuling trophy, dragon egg, swamp key, yellow mushroom

all of those things glow.

If you are talking for travelling, it is either torch or the headlamp from the trader
