Yay I figured it out on my own too :D

I died at sea while trying to climb onto a Leviathan to escape a sea serpent that destroyed my raft. I believe my tombstone was within or under the Leviathan. Never could find it. Spawned my stuff back and moved on.

Strike that. Just found the back up saves. thank you :)

Speaking of console, there is "find" command which can help locate stuff. (edit: tombstone full name is: "Player_tombstone". With that you can make sure if stuff actually disappeared. Thou i think the search is limited to the chunk you are in so walk around and ping few times.

Until the new modes are introduced, and til the game is finished, these frustrations will likely just be a thing. But we have console commands to mitigate them. Just use them wisely not to cheat yourself out of the experience, but instead to tailor it to fit your own game-mode.

F5 to go into console, then type devcommands.

After that, use help to find the commands you want to use. I cant remember them all specifically at the moment. But one important one is 'God', before typing 'fly'. Otherwise you may accidently drop to the ground and have more than one gravestone to deal with.

Look up commands as you need. Just dont use them unless you need to. You'll only ruin the experience for yourself. That said, they can be necessary for some of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ moments an early access game is bound to have.

No matter how well polished Valheim is, it is still a work in progress.

If you find what was mentioned above (F5) does not seem to be working, you will need to go to your steam library, right click on valhiem, goto properties, and under launch options type:
-console
This will allow F5 to work in game. Then follow everything Adamg stated.

I suggest reloading an older save of your character, I had this happen once in a dungeon

I dont have an older save and the cloud is being weird for me right now. Guess im just SoL.

Same as for me. Haven't had this happen before. My might have sunken through an Ancient Root, which is where I died and where the map marker is.
