Portals 101
Seems there's alot of misunderstanding on how portals work or how to utilize their function. Here's a guide hopefully it's understandable.
1. When one portal is built the second portal built will automatically connect to it. When a third and fourth portal are built they will automatically connect to each other just like how portal one and two did and so forth and so on.
2. You can tag portals therefore linking two portals with the same name ie Swamp or Home. These are case sensitive so remember your spelling and grammar.
3. You can either make new portal after new portal after new portal and set them as a permanent portal hub of never changing the tags on the pair of portals or you can have a Network by swapping tags around on a portal to travel to other tagged portals placed around the world.
4. On the subject of changing portal tags. If a tag is changed on a portal, say going to Swamp and instead now going to Plains after the tag is changed the portal does not immediately change it's location. If you jump through the now Plains portal straight away it will instead take your to the initial tag of Swamp.
Why? The portal hasn't rebooted as you are standing next to the portal while the wormhole has already engaged to Swamp. Walk away from the portal so the wormhole can disengage, you can physically see the portal "fire" extinguish, then reapproach
the portal and it will engage a wormhole to the tag you set on it, in this case the Plains.
5. Changing a tag on an engaged wormhole can be utilised to change the tags on a pair of portals for instance I will engage the Swamp portal, change the tag to Home101 jump through the portal and now I'll change the second Swamp portal to Home101 which has now relinked them with new tags.
6. Another use for changing engaged portal tags is exploration. Say you have an untagged portal at base that you can connect to with a portal when out exploring. Once you have placed the untagged portal it will link with the untagged portal at base. Before jumping through change the tag to, for example, North and then jump through. Once back at base you can either set another permanent portal up to connect to North or you can change the tag of the network portal. Go back through your linked North portal and now you can keep exploring and you still have a unlinked, untagged portal back at base to connect with while your out and about.
I hope this has been a helpful guide to portals in Valheim. Also portals don't work underwater, you can enter portals from both sides but you always exit on the rune side, which can result in some interesting building opportunities fyi.

A good thing to practice for sure, not really a different portal function per say but definitely would be a game saver if you forget to let the portal re engage or have some other unforseen circumstance Great guide. +1
I would also add a suggestion:
7. Have one unconnected portal at the base all the time.
Use it as decoration (as a door like in hobbit house or as a frame for boss trophy). Name it "backup" and try to not use it at all. Don't mistake this backup portal with temporary exploring portal. This one should not be used at any time if possible. The reason for having a backup portal is that by playing with portal tags sooner or later you will get stranded somewhere far away from home as a result of mistake described by OP (no 4.). If you don't have unconnected portal back at home, your only way home could be to die. Having backup portal will allow you to get back home easily and fix a mistake you made earlier.

Absolutely. I like to have at least 3 portals in my base:A good thing to practice for sure, not really a different portal function per say but definitely would be a game saver if you forget to let the portal re engage or have some other unforseen circumstance Great guide. +1

A backup portal
A adventure portal
And a portal for accessing other established portals in the world
I make sure both the adventure and general use portals are close to my storage area so I can teleport and drop off materials quickly

I don't like the idea portals can connect without a given name (blank)
When I want to change a portal name I put XXX first so it changes to unconnected before then entering the correct name of portal I want to go to.

1. is not true. your first and second portal are not bound to connect. the tag is empty so every portal that you place with an empty tag will look for another unoccupied portal with the same tag. so if someone else already placed such a portal your first one will connect to that one and your second one will stay unconnected (its global, not by player)
good stuff. especially the exploration portal is usually such a time saver
the very first portals (if unnamed) are connecting to each other

thats how portals work - and to people who are up to the old ore and ingot teleportation question
NO!
there is no transportation for ingots and/or ores
deal with this and use the ingame ways of transportation
or use a mod (at your own risk)
thanks for that tutorial maybe people will find this helpful
(im experienced with valheim and so i recommend reading this)

Thanks to the recent Steam sales, I am able to acquire some more points and give out some more awards to the both of you.
If only the mods can do a Q&A sticky that redirects to guides like this. [nudge] [nudge] [wink] [wink]

Thanks M.Red, thanks Lecherous Lychee. Thanks luponix that is correct I did not go into detail of global player portals. I edited so it's global friendly information now π

I always screw up the rename and wait for reboot every time I come back to this game. It can be frustrating but frustration leads to not making that mistake again!

...which is why when out exploring a new area, I carry enough resources to build a portal back to the hub...and of course, rename your 'return' portal first! I plan out my explorations before I head out, establishing the portal is #1 on the list[where we goin', what we doin'?]. I have both setups in my main base, dedicated paths I constantly run to and a generic, 'out visiting' portal setup. I also keep namingConventions in iterations; Swamp1, Swamp2, etc...Plains1, Plains2. There are also unique names as well...the main point is to be organized when dealing with portals.
