My Longship Disappeared...
simply put, my first longship just disappeared, no materials remain. Glitch? It was very close to shore, easily swimming distance with minimum stamina.
Any explanation appreciated.

Yeah I left my karve on the shore near some fulings, came back and it was up on bricks.

My area is in the meadows. My ship was a longship, not a karve. Thankfully, i emptied the hold as soon as i landed(holdfast was full load of iron. That would've sucked to the point of quit/restart.)
Last time i had seen my ship it was being attacked by a greyling and it was, weirdly, almost destroyed. My place is modest/ghetto and the ship is always within eyesight. It just seems like a glitch rather than an oversight on my part, although the tide maybe, just maybe, could be responsible.

Destroyed carts and boats drop cargo boxes if they had cargo in their inventory when destroyed, which float. Maybe think about parking near to fires/torches that will keep greylings away? I park mine under my bedroom. I can shoot mobs that attack my boats from the window.
Place a ward. It will alarm if anything within its range gets damaged.

To clarify, if it isn't a glitch, the fault is totally on me. I haven't made anything close to a dock or even a safe harbor, mostly because karves aren't too big a deal to build.
It was, despite my 500+ hours clocked, my first longship. I had always found karves perfectly serviceable. I had always assumed the longship was pretty much a multiplayer thing, no ides it's cargohold was insane.
Also, the torch idea is great, thank you. I'll do that after i make a proper dock.

We once experienced severe lag on a multiplayer server while we were sailing. When the lag was over, we had spawned inside the water, a friend and I were put relatively close to the shore, while another friend was further from shore. We never saw the ship in the area again until we were en route to explore plains. Suddenly we saw our ship, which had just had continued sailing for a bit. All our resources (a lot of silver) was still inside the hull. Do you know if you lagged?

most likely explanation is that either mobs or the rising and falling waves destroyed it and the that the materials despawned after an hour or drifted into the deeper sea and then despawned there

I know there was a bug once that allowed the seagulls to land on stuff, then take off with the item in tow. Happened with ships a lot. But I believe they were suppose to of already fixed that bug.
But I guess such bugs could always rear their ugly heads again maybe?

Something broke your ship (either a mob or waves bashing it into rocks), then the items despawned. Nothing despawns inside workbench range (though mobs will destroy workbenches). Outside workbench range and in water items despawn VERY quickly (I've tested it, throwing stuff into the sea), but I don't know if that is true if also within workbench range.
I always kill any nearby mobs and put down a fire and workbench whenever I park a boat. Just in case.

I thought this too, but just a couple days ago I was out sailing and had bad fog roll in and got Something broke your ship (either a mob or waves bashing it into rocks), then the items despawned. beached unfortunately in the plains right in front of a fuling base.
I jumped ship and ran. They destroyed the ship. I cleared the fulings over a 20 minute span and returned to where my ship had been. All the resources were still there for it.
I had thought if items were destroyed or deconstructed by the player you would get the resources back, but if destroyed by enemies they would disappear.
Apparently not the case?

Destroyed stuff always drop their materials, no matter who or what destroys it.
That's nightmare fuel that is, lol
When I say stuff in the water despawns quickly, I mean relatively. Stuff on land seems to hang around for days. When I threw stuff into the sea they were gone in a day I think.
