I had uninstalled Valheim, and have reinstalled the game. It doesn't act like it's updating anything, just resets to "Play."

Edited to add: It says the Cloud status is up to date.

did you manually delete the folders? or the world files... these are often left behind in an unistall gimme a sec i find file paths

Where can I find my save files?
When you start the game for the first time after the Cloud Save Patch from 20th June 2022, your save files will be in the same folder as before, these will be marked as ‘legacy saves’. When you play with a character or world, when it saves the next time, the file will be moved to one of two locations.

By default, if you have Steam Cloud saves enabled in your Steam settings (which is enabled by default), the file will be moved to the new cloud location. It's found in your steam/userdata folder, which is a folder not meant to be manipulated manually, but if you want the files to make manual backups for example, you can find the paths below.

If you have disabled Steam Cloud saving in the past, your saves will instead be moved to a new folder in the same base directory as the old saves, but with the new folder called “worlds_local” and “characters_local”.
Any time a file is moved between folders (either automatically from legacy, or manually using the button, a local backup is created). (See details below ...)

Steam Cloud save folder:
Windows: Steam\userdata\NUMERICSTEAMID\892970\remote

A final note on the Steam Cloud save folder – In the ‘892970’ folder you will also see a folder named “ac” (auto cloud) which stores your old legacy saves. With this new system, we simply keep this one enabled as well.

oh there a few ppl have "issues" w cloud saves... maybe turn that off for a while while you debugg starting game...(some one will suggest not cloud saving at all fyi :-) )

so you world and online world save will be updating.. but stucture has changed significantly... turn off steam cloud, try again .. have a drink. chat , com back and lsee how its going... mine "timed out" but i clicked wait or whatever microsft prompts to continue.. eventually it sorted its little brain out... and thanks GL with it lemme know im on for about 1 hour still .but back way later

Did you have mods installed? They're probably still there and break the game.

What does C:\Users\<YourWindowsUserName>\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\Player.log contain any hints? Does it contain any information about the recent starts?

Take a look in any ProcessExplorer/TaskManager. Are there more than one (hung) instance of valheim.exe? etc....

Hardware OK? Memtest86+, SMART Data, Windows system logs/protocols, other steam games are working fine?

Add
in VHs Steam game options as a launch parameter, try again and look at what the console tells you. + Take a look at the log again.
Does the console even show (not the ingame one but the cmd-shell one logging what VH currently does)?


When you don't try to investigate yourself first and tell us what you've already tried its impossible to help because it's just fishing in the dark.

Narrowing down possible reasons from near infinity (="it doesn't start") isn't possible.

if you havent played this year then the process to update worlds ca take a very long time the first time you try and play.. just let it run,, walk away grab a drink, its updating your worlds with new content based on what you have or havent explored.. im guessing you have world files from before..?
