When exploring, always get the rest bonus and avoid getting wet. Not being rested and wet can easily make an unexpected encounter with a group of ennemies from a glorious battle that you come victorious and dying, face down in a puddle of water.

At the beginning, try to find a hut and make it your home. Before starting a huge base.

Don't go out at night.
Go to Sleep insted and make your home comfortable.
The more comfortable it is, the longer your rested value lasts.
Rested value affects your stamina, health generation and your efficiency in combat or mining.
So make sure you're always well Rested when leaving your base.

Sitting near campfires may regain some well Rested points.
So if you're exhausted and your home is far, make a campfire.

Make sure you've got always something to eat, 3 different type of food at least.
You won't die from hunger, but without food, your stamina is almost non-existent and health bar stops regenerating.

Avoid visiting other biomes before you crafted and upgraded your gear.

Don't focus on one weapon only.
Try to skill sword, bow and blunt weapons at least.
You will need them later.

Don't try to rush the game. If you rush, you die.

Avoid dying. Every time you die, you'll lose 5% of all your skills.
So retreating is always an option.

Be a good engineer. Construct bastions to hold your power & centralize everything.
Build your way to the top of the food chain.

Play with only people who are new to the game, and make a rule that nobody can look up spoilers, and you will get intense joy from the progression. Don't use heavy shields or metal chest/legs. Only use bucklers at most and metal helmet with light armour chest/legs because the metal helmet doesn't slow your running speed, and I recommend spear or knife starting out, because its far easier to avoid taking damage if you use a fast weapon.

Keep your belly full. It gives you more health and stamina. Also, learn to parry well and dodge well.

Recipes are unlocked based on what materials you have picked up. Pick up every type of plant and stone. Chop every type of tree, except for the big ones in the swamp that are indestructible. Craft ingots and nails. If the recipes you think you should have aren't showing up, check to see if you can upgrade your workbench, forge or cauldron.

Smoke requires a full wall square of space to vent outside. It can be contained inside if your roof is high enough or the box its venting into is big enough. Your fire does need a roof to keep out rain, so plan your chimney accordingly. Or, just put it right outside the wall if you want to.

Most mobs, all the early game ones anyway, can't jump. They can't navigate up steep inclines and they try not to fall off of cliffs. Don't run into the open meadow when something is chasing you. Instead lead it through as many obstacles as you can.

In reference to the previous point, you can alter the terrain with the right tools. Combat engineering is a thing. Mobs can't damage the ground itself.

Raids happen, and advance every time you kill a boss (plus a few other triggers but bosses are the big one.) Be prepared to build defenses for your base, or just lead the attackers around for a couple minutes inside the red circle. They prefer attacking you but they will destroy your buildings if they can't get to you.

The biome order is Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands. Going out of order will be painful. Also every time you go to a new biome, go slow and sneak. You are a new player all over again until you learn the place and upgrade food and gear.

Poison resist must be used before you get poisoned. It's a resist, not an antidote. Also the swamp hates your boat. Try to walk in if possible.

Unless it's coming from your own hives, that buzzing sound is not your friend. Every mob makes a sound. Headphones or stereo speakers are recommended. Many times you will hear something before you see it.

Food keeps your hp and stamina high so keep some in your inventory no matter what you're doing, your base can get raided when you're in there so you don't want to be low on hp and stam building a roof then scrambling to get ready in the middle of a raid.

The Rested buff is a pretty good thing to have as it massively increases stamina and hp regen. You get it by spending some time in an enclosed area with a fire nearby. The more 'comfortable' that area is the longer the buff will last, things that add comfort being chairs rugs banners tables etc.

Explore your starting island, try to find a good spot in the meadows near the black forest and with good water access so you can get a boat for travel. Berry bushes don't respawn if you break them, they can't be planted, but they do grow more berries so be sure you got a good patch nearby. You want to be near the black forest so you can get to copper and tin easily, but don't be so near that mobs from there will agro. Don't enter the forest until you are ready, you gotta kill the first boss then you know you'll be ready.

Raids also come from the 'next boss up' so to say. Before the first boss raids will be medows area enemies, boars and lizards all easy to deal with. After him you will get monsters from the forest, greydwarfs and trolls, they can damage and destroy buildings so you should have a good outer wall up by then. An earthen wall and moat is best, you don't gotta fill it with water enemies aren't too good at climbing.

Almost forgot damage types. A simple wooden club can do wonders against skeletons, but won't do much to the blubber of a troll. A nice sharp arrow can pierce the trolls hide pretty deep, especially if you get him in the eye, but wont do much to a pile of walking bones.

Base building is some of the best i've ever seen in a survival game, moats and walls are your best friends. And remember, you have a nice patch of land?, you'll need like 3 times more than that, be one with the hoe, become the hoe, think like the hoe.

Just have fun. Your first play through should be the most enjoyable since everything will be a time of discovery. If you get stuck, lots of content providers and of course the wiki[valheim.fandom.com] and world generator[valheim-map.world] but give yourself a chance before you look.
