Every zone has a super enemy, trolls are the big boys of the forest.

Trolls are mostly for bow/arrow and dodge practice. Pewpew them from range, and practice dodging when they swing. They aren't that scary, at least the ones without a big stick.

They teach you how to manage stamina, archery, and what a shield is for, they're also for early mining of copper.
Animals are for teaching stealth and archery.
Water is for teaching the futility of sails.
Creatures that throw things are for teaching you about your shield blocking and parry.
Armor is for teaching you that wolves don't care about it.
Did that rock just stand up?

Mosquitoes... psh. whatever - AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! my stuff...

Welcome to Valheim LOL... This isn't a "casual" game where the player is some sort of "super hero" that rushes through slaughtering everything in their path with reckless abandon... It's a tough game and if you dont stay prepared and careful, it will kill you dead at any given point... The troll is the first in a long line of "we mean business" mobs.

I see it as a way to "enforce" the fairly steep step-up in difficulty that each biome has compared to the previous one.

This game is very much designed to follow a certain progression structure, which is that the player is meant to stay within their current biome until they discover and gather every type of resource that biome has to offer which will unlock crafting stations, and food recipes, and item recipes based on those resources, and prepares the player to be able to reasonably "handle" fighting the boss of that biome, signaling that the player is ready to move on to the next biome, (in the progression), to repeat that same process.

The difficulty jumps significantly for each new biome which is why the is a very audible "announcement" from the game and a visit from the bird with a "warning" about being prepared, the first time the player crosses from Meadows to Black Forest.

At THAT stage in the game, the Troll is a mob to be taken somewhat seriously, as the player (presumably) has not yet accumulated the skills and gear to adequately deal with trolls, except maybe from a distance with bow and arrows.

By the time the player has fully explored the Black Forest, gathered resources, and upgraded gear, foods and work stations, the troll becomes much less of a threat... Don't get me wrong, you still need to use care, but the player survivablity is much better and before long the player will be actively hunting down those trolls for their hides (troll leather armor).

As mentioned every biome has it's own version of the "troll".... a mob that seems VERY tough when first entering a new biome, but gets less dangerous as the players progress and prepare and learn the ropes.

trolls are my friends, i use them to take down swaths of trees really fast.

Trolls are actually very easy. Just use the bow, shoot at them, then run away when they come close.

Trolls aren't really all that scary. They're specifically weak to piercing to even encourage you to use bows. If they try to melee, just sprint away (no dodge needed since they attack so slowly)

It's a little difficult to get behind them, but it works. Use the special attack (for M&KB it is mouse3). Usually shaves off 90% of their health unless they're starred, then you can just slash them after parrying and then they're gone.

There is a "troll" in every biome: abomination, golem, etc.

IMO they're some sort of "milestone". Once you can kill them easily you're in good shape to move on to the next region.

Keep in mind, it is easy to run away from them.

I agree with the milestone idea, just don't count kiting them with bow as meeting that milestone.

If you see a red one just run!!!

Doesn't seem strong to me nor does above seem like an overly complicated sequence of attacks.........

trolls are interesting to stalk ...i'll hide sometimes in stealth mode behind tree take off stealth mode ... blueface comes towards me i walk around the tree haha then it stomps its feet like a little spoil troll, runs back and forth, smells the air and its finger .. starts to walk away i hit the tree or rock comes flying over i run fast to get under it and hit its ankles with lazer sword. i read a comment you'll know when to move on to the next area or enemy . But flying bugs Mosquitoes with stingers so long or dragons or wolves that eat you or swamp creatures unless i join a group server to go out with other players i don't think im venturing out into the wilds. Who knows what Odin will bring my way..

The game warns you about them. Just sneak past them
