IPv6 compatibility
Did anyone manage to connect to a server using an IPv6 adress yet?
I set up a dockerized dedicated server in my local network but were not able to connect to it using its IPv6 adress yet. Doing so using the IPv4 address, however, worked fine.

I think this is a specific case of the more general "steam can't be arsed to support IPV6" thing.
It's a pain as more and more ISPs go to CGNAT for IPv4 but until devs and users make a point of demanding it then it won't change.

Same problem here. My ISP only provides me with a IPv6 adress.
What I don't fully understand is, why can my friends join my game via friendlist but I can not host a dedicated server? Where is the technical difference?
I also don't see the problem in general. Why can't I just use my IPv6 adress?

friendlist doesn't ask ISP for permission What I don't fully understand is, why can my friends join my game via friendlist but I can not host a dedicated server? Where is the technical difference?
it just joins using id of steam session
probably noone created *whatever is required for it to work* yet, since it's not popular I also don't see the problem in general. Why can't I just use my IPv6 adress?
if someone makes it so it ignores steam and connects directly to IP... it might work, but probably noone will bother to make such mod :D

it's pretty much implemented by every ISP at this point in the world, most don't force it though because most home users don't know how to setup ipv6 on their home routers or their router is so old it doesn't support it.
Seriously try explaining to non-tech people the following steps
Login to router (whats a router?)
Click WAN (why is it crying?)
Click enable IPv6 (I'm blind and can't see it)
Under settings click native (ahhhhh stop it with the nerd talk)
Under firewall click block incoming ipv6 (what gibberish are you speaking?)

See in the manual from Router and make a NAT - IPv6 config.
e.g. AVM is able to do that.

Thank you for your answers. I do have a AVM Fritz!Box 6591 Cable and would try that.
My ISP is Vodafone Cable (germany).
How would NAT help in this case? My router can't just make up any IPv4 for the server, which would be accessible from outside, can it?

Ich antworte dir mal auf deutsch. :sfg:

So the idea of using an internal bridge is not the solution, if friends want to connect from outside.
Valheim developers, would you please make it possible to join dedicated servers via IPv6?
Or at least make it possible for the host to leave the game without making it crash for everyone else (e.g. by transfering the host to someone else).

Das sollte die Fritz.Box machen. Wenn du das Häkchen setzt bei IPv6.
Ich hatte dich schon verstanden.^^
Lok tar. :-))

It would not help. You are absolutely correct: Your friends will have no way to connect from outside since Valheim doesn't accept an IPv6 address as input. There are some services that provide an IPv4 to IPv6 bridge (I'm using feste-ip.net for that), but unfortunately, this only works with TCP connections, not UDP.
I've spend some more hours finding a solution but no success so far. Turns out, it's not even Valheim that's the problem here but the server browser built into Steam (yes, the interface you already know from CS 1.6) doesn't seem to have support for IPv6.

I was just about to try portmapping via feste-ip.net. It's unfortunate that even this way won't work. You saved me some time by letting me know, thank you!
Well then... I have to give up for now I guess :(

There's still one idea I've got: Setting up an openVPN server in the same docker network with the Valheim server. I don't know if this would work but the idea is to tunnel the traffic from IPv6 into IPv4 using the feste-ip.net TCP portmapper and then being able to send and receive UDP packages in the encapsulated network.

more of a workaround than solution...
but, did you try hamachi?
it works similar to steam, ignores your ISP and allows to connect without all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
ye, I know, the idea came a week too late, but still applies

I'm facing the same issue and did a little of investigation. I settet up a server and tried two DNS configurations: AAAA only (does not work) and A & AAAA (works). Using the hostname in the "Join IP" dialog seems only to trigger a DNS A lookup, so currently IPv6 seems just not to be enabled.
Also I could not figure out a format to enter the IPv6-Address into the "Join IP" dialog.
Would be nice if the Iron-Gate people could provide intel on this matter.
