What could be the reason for poor performance?
I used to own a computer that was pretty weak all things considered. Recently I bought a pc from best buy that was a fair amount of money.... I can run some games that I think look amazing that my old pc couldn't, and that pc ran valheim very easily. So what gives? Is anyone else experiencing frame rate drops and or freezes / hangs? I just now had a forest is moving moving moment and my game genuinely froze...

This is your issue. Best Buy PCs are filled with bloatware and overpriced low-mid tier hardware. At minimum, you should wipe the OS, install it from scratch so you get rid of the bloatware, and install your drivers for the hardware manually. What is bloatware? Are you referring to active programs? I checked those and there's nothing really additional as far as I can see. The only bloatware I can think of were those annoying anti-virus ads for mccaffee. Are you saying there are hidden cpu / ram sucking programs? xD

I can confirm on the Steam Deck that tree rendering completely abuses the gpu to silly levels;
99% usage/80c even on the main menu. Looking at the ground immediately goes to 50%, at space without trees roughly 70%. If you want smooth gameplay, I suggest deforestation around your bases until the trees are too far away to render in.

That's kinda hard to determine since you didn't provide any specs of your pc nor your settings in-game or out side of the game (like power options, DSR etc..)
What could help is to check if your pc is in on power saving mode, bump it up to at least balanced. Update graphics driver, put everything on low inside the game. Bump everything up a notch play a bit, then repeat till the game starts to lag. Other then that, idk. Game does have some performance issues even on high end pc if you've built alot of things. There is also a thing where the game auto-saves every like 10 minutes and it drops fps
That's smart. I hadn't thought to check my power settings. I've built a few pc's before and tbh after I've done it before, and cost isn't much of an issue, buying a prebuilt one is just easier. So I knew to download drivers and all that jazz. Thanks for all your feedback. Didn't know mistlands created bugs and possible performance issues too. Thanks

Sounds like a driver issue maybe. Even pre-built pc's might need some updating and tinkering. Try reducing or turning off various options, one of them might be a weak point of your new setup but I agree that everything should be working fine, that's why drivers pop up in my mind
