Points of Sail

Does anyone know how accurate the sailing mechanics are? I know you can tack and sail into the wind at 45 degrees. But what about ship speeds in relation to something like being at beams reach or while running with the wind?

And yet it was not. Have a nice day.

Forgive me I forget everyone else has actually competent team members. One of my guys tried to kill a serpent with a war hammer in the middle of the ocean. You can guess how well that went.

The sailing is pretty accurate as such, but I am not sure the vikings had the type of rigging that let you sail up against the wind. Noone is; there is no surviving rigging from the time so there is some guesswork. The boats were certainly fast in a tailwind; they have the speed pretty accurate with existing replicas and simulations.

And, when the wind fails, rowing is faster. Which is also accurate.

My GF did a lot of sailing as a kid, had her own sailboat, and says it feels right and that it's obvious the developers have done some sailing.

That's good enough for me. But it's not a simulation - anything which automates rigging and doesn't let you make mistakes is pretty far from a simulation.

Some did a test on Youtube. It was Firespark or Wak.

The sailing has a bunch of physics going on and it feels pretty good but I'd hesitate to call it simulation. Steering mechanics at low speed are particularly abstract and obviously videogamey, the longship kinda pivots magically around its prow. I assume everything else operates at a similar 'good enough' level.

"Accurate" as in similar to reality? I think they got one thing a little wrong (but not enough to really b&*ch about it). With a single square sail, as on these boats, your best wind really is from dead astern. It's with a fore-and-aft rigged ship that you'll get your best speed from the stern quarters.

Anybody know of a mod that would show sailing speed? Would love to see the actual knots.

You can't prove anything.

People argue that a side wind is superior to a tail wind, and if you look at the color shading around the wind circle the game would seem to agree, the colors are brighter on the sides than they are directly at tail.

I don't know if anyone has done experiments in-game, but I have to imagine they have.
