will this game ever get an option to play without the death punishment?

sometimes i like playing survival games in hardcore mode, the punishment system in this game is an interesting mechanic and could be fun but without an option to turn it off, it makes the game unplayable most of the time since most of the time i play games to relax, not stress out.

Proper foods, armor, weapons, potions, tactics, and the application of patience and the death penalty becomes a non-issue.

But for the question.. no one is likely to know until it is closer to release.

There's a mod for that. Like most other things.

there are times for that too. different days, different moods. that is why having choices/options/settings are good. can't get the balance wrong with those around.

Yes it will take a bit of effort to get mods working. The whole point of mods is to allow options that players want which the devs are unlikely to accomodate in a timely manner.

This would be one of them. The grave mod lets you keep some or all of your stuff when you die, depending on how you configure it. So you could keep your food lets say for an easier run. Or keep just equipped stuff. Or both. Or everything.

Well, not really. I dont think he wants to just be invincible. That seems really boring. Just less death-punishment.
Theres another mod that "fortifies" your skills. It grows slower but provides a baseline that your skills cannot drop below that point. Good for little used skills not fading to nothing.
It wont make a difference on your main skills, but does allow you to buff other skills without losing them entirely.

I use both of these mods with Epic Valheim since it cranks the difficulty significantly such that dying is gonna happen more often than a vanilla run, so this compensates.

Was just pointing out there was a mod, which works and are easy to set up in less than 10 mins, contrary to a non-existing checkbox.
But whatever, have fun.

i hear you guys (and thanks to @joemama1512 for clarifying that all i want is a checkbox that'll stop the skill loss on death). i would consider it if the mod was official so there is some assurance that the mod won't get broken by updates. but as it is, i'll go back to playing my other games and check back in a few months to see if anything has changed regarding this. cheers :)

That fortifying mod sounds great, can you share the name of it? Though I'd honestly want the opposite; so if you don't use a skill it naturally degrades. One of my friends is crazy leveled, but that's because they rarely leave camp and thus rarely die, while myself and another guy risk our skins to push the progression and die a lot. You'd think thematicly that dying a glorious death in combat should be looked upon favorably in Vahalla and farming not so much.

Devcommands
Ghost

I'm not going to comment further: IMHO using mods which changes game's behavior, not the UI only, is exactly like using devcommands, so why not using them?

That's in "macro" language:
  • start the game
  • IF mood == relax THEN F5; devcommands; ghost;
  • play;

Because using mods brings more to it than a "quick fix". Maintenance and the risk that they break every time there's an update. It's a PITA really, if you're not a big fan of managing mods.

The real answer (minus cheat modes) is to stay aware and well-fed so that you survive encounters. But, there will be times where you just get in a bad spot and can't escape. Have good backup gear ready so you can jump into it, feed up and do the corpse run. It's a survival game--death is part of that. Understood about wanting to remove the harshness of death and if that's how you want to roll, go for it. It does trivialize the challenges at that point but as you the OP said, sometimes you just want to have a peaceful session and not deal with the hardcore death penalties.

The fortificaton skill mod is called Fortify Skills. Here is a link https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/172

The config file allows you to fine tune it, like how far the fortified skill lags behind the regular skill, etc.

It seems even work on other skill-add mods such as Vitality, Ice Magic, and so forth.

be aware that it apparently comes with a default 50% XP gain on all skills which I did not know about until just now. He probably should have kept that vanilla as a default value.
