Enemies still attack my stuff
So sometimes I'm not even at home and enemies STILL attack my beehives. they're up stairs behind a door, and I'm no where near them - a whole portal travel away. This is the same for my Swamp house. I was very far away in a Crypt and when I came home skeletons were attacking my base for no reason. Did I misunderstand the last update notes? Or have I done something wrong? Does the statue thing prevent enemies from damaging my stuff, or is it just players?

Until you get the Drake event, then walls and moats are useless. I find that event the hardest to deal with. oh yeah, the ditch is tried and true protection for sure. the alternative is ground raised to max height. Very stone intensive. No mobs can jump a gap, and no mobs can destroy earth. So take your pick if you want ultra safe. outside of that you can build an island base.

I only dealt with that once in my last full playthrough, and they barely broke through my wood roof/wall pieces and couldn't really touch the stone. I guess YMMV but as long as you have everything important roofed they can't do much.

I dug a large ditch all the way around my base. Then on the inner rim I placed the tall fence. Seems to work. Trolls will still hit the fence but the event is usually over by the time one falls....so it's fine. I don't even have to worry about events anymore, which means I don't have to waste food while messing around in my base.
Thank you, never thought to do a ditch old castle style.

Skeletons might aggro your base if you are near a Black Forest or have killed Bonemass in which case Skeletons can then spawn in the Meadows. Skeleton Archers are probably what destroyed the hives.
Walls, moats, earthen ramparts and anti spawn buildings like workbenches can help deal with outside enemies.

When you aren't around the area doesn't exist in a dynamic sense. It's paused and nothing can happen, it doesn't exist in game without a player nearby. So those things are only happening when you are near them. They can load in fairly far, 60m+ at least so you need to a) have walls and such and b)inside those walls have no spawn items so enemies can't spawn inside while you approach.

That Ward protects nothing from damage. It prevents other players from opening stuff or building/deconstructing via hammer, and chimes with a blue aura whenever anything in its radius is attacked/damaged.

Statue is only for players. Only walls and moats can save your building from being damaged.
