You tame something like a Two Star wolf, you walk it all the way back to base only to have a Moronsquito surprise backstab it. It was my fault for passing by a plains biome shortcut, but yea I hate Deathsquitos.

@kysstfafm
The tames in Valheim learned the pyramid trick from World War Z. The boars are so good at it but wolves and lox have it mastered.

It's worth it to overbreed them though, but for this particular reason, I just needed a companion in my base.

I've got a terrain-enclosed Meadows base next to Black Forest & Plains (my "Plains farmhouse" next to terrain-enclosed "Plains farmland") with maybe 20 or more wolves inside & maybe 10 outside & a separate terrain-enclosed lox pen with maybe 8 lox at any one time, rarely have (either) deathsquito (or fuling) incursions within the enclosed areas.

Outside though, I've had tame lox & such just auto-attract deathsquito spawns that target them until they eventually die - not so nice when a pair of lox sire a calf & the calf is dead less than a day later due to fresh spawned group of deathsquito drawn to obscenely selectively easy prey (AI preferential treatment Irongate?). If the lox would just be able to eat berries that are picked & off the bush on the ground or even eat them straight from the bush but the lox rarely notice the picked berries (like 20% chance to notice one right under their noses). I literally would have to put one berry down per sq. meter of ground all over the plains before I'd have a targetted lox do more than stand glumly & take the damage when it isn't attacking or running. The terrain-enclosures on the lox though have to be quite high/deep or you get them building lox pyramids & trying to pretend not to escape while in fact doing nearly everything necessary for a breakout. But really the AI has to be coded to escape despite them looking for all the world like they want you to believe that the programmers hadn't coded to make them seek to perform a large hairy H. Houdini as if by complete accident.

I will always remember triumphantly sailing my 2 star boar that I finally located back to my base when he leapt overboard to fight the sea serpent that was following us. I saw a puff of purple in the wake and wept.

I found a small island just offshore that had Meadows, Black Forest and Plains. The mainland shore was the base of the Mountain biome. Long story short - built base on the Meadows end of the island, tamed Lox and enclosed them to evade the Squitos, brought in some tamed no-star wolves. I began releasing tamed Lox and hoped to get enough going to 'conquer' the Fuling and Deathsquito attacks. I had about 10 Lox out there but they were being slowly cut down. I was spending much time throwing cloudberries for them to heal. Once I got about a dozen wolves I mixed them in where the Lox seemed to congregate. I think they lasted one night lol. The Lox did do a bit better with the wolves as 'protein shields' but it was turning into a job doing the breeding and maintenance work. I could see mass breeding more wolves and keep going with the Lox but that would likely end by Death By Low FPS.
The plus side of this is the 1-1/2 chests of black iron scraps and 100+ needles in a few game days. Not to mention the drops from the overwhelmed dwarves from the Black Forest and defenseless boars, deer and necks in the Meadows. Lox and wolves are pretty heartless lol Need any eyes?

I have an all Meadows base with a lot of boars and wolves with an FPS that dips into the teens. Not a good plan for those scurrying Fuling or the Deathsquitos flitting about.

I made the mistake of training some wolves a good two days boat travel from my main base. I tried to get a pair of them to the base 3-4 times, and failed every time.

This was on my main world, where I get a pack of fuling every night, without fail, if I'm up too late.

I tried sailing straight through, but, of course, a sea serpent appeared and they went. I tried stopping for the night, but stopped too late, and the fulings stopped by to kill them. I tried stopping early enough to get camp setup before sundown, but then it stretched it out too long and something got them along the way.

That's not even mentioning the trouble with clearing the drake from the mountain just to bring them down to the boat!

I finally just went thought the whole process again on a closer mountain.

I've heard that windmills make good anti-Deathsqeeto base defense emplacements. I Don't know if the windmills would be higher on the Deathsqeeto's "To Kill" list than wolves and Lox though.

Oh yeah. I had a pack of 3-4 wolves, 2-star, and all got stung to death by those cursed squitos.
