So I did die. This is a tough fight. I don't have any more cores to create more portals sadly. So I am going to have to sail back up to get my gear.

You shouldn't be exploring without portal materials. Just go get more cores, they are very easy to find.

Not to be critical, and only to be helpful, I believe you need to upgrade your gear before you scout about or go after iron or swamp biomes.

Looking at your screenshot a flint knife, club and crude bow will get you killed rather fast in a swamp. Troll/brass armor, finewood bow, bronze weapons and tools are a must in the swamps.

Much of this game is grinding materials to upgrade gear in the biome you have just gotten access too, before you explore the next to avoid a lot of grief, i.e. bronze/black forest, then iron/swamp before going further. It can be done if you are aware of what is coming, but for a first time play through being too squishy will get you killed... frequently.

All the tips in this thread are good ones, they will help you :)

Yeah, that is just the gear I had left from my base. I'm on my way to get all of my upgrade gear at my dead body. I just have had zero luck in finding a swamp biome.

Well, doesn't look like I am getting my gear back. Elder is just standing by waiting.

Get full of good food, empty inventory and you may have a chance of run in and out quickly!

I agree it's a good idea to explore the swamp before fighting the Elder. Plenty of really useful stuff to find even if (and it really is extremely likely) you don't come across any iron.

But do NOT go to the swamp without poison resistance mead.

Mountains you should stay out of for now, because even if you make frost resistance mead the enemies in that biome will slaughter you in no time.

Sea serpents only spawn during the night and stormy weather, so Ocean is safe during clear days. The karve can also outrun the serpents when sailing at full speed.

The biome you are looking for is the swamp. However, you should defeat the Elder before exploring a swamp, as the boss drops a useful item for it.

Meadow > Black Forest > Swamp > Mountain > Plains

Frankly, rather than up the world difficulty, I would explore the swamps first looking for crypts and upgraded food items.

You can upgrade a lot before you go into crypts or beat the Elder. This will make your fight with the Elder easier and you can scope and set up places to go so that when you do beat the Elder you can jump right into the swamp crypts.

Either way you want to check out the swamp biome.

I'd generally recommend scouting the next biome a bit before taking on the boss from the previous one. As Guns says, there's usually a bunch of useful upgrades you can pick up around the edges. If you're really lucky with swamp scouting you can pick up a couple of iron and start building with stone.
