Where has everything gone?

I've opened my game, but lost everything?

the map shows my icons for portals, but all my buildings have vanished, why has my world returned to day 1?

I still have my character, but everything else... GONE!

My apologies, but if you closed down your game normally, you've most likely been a victim of the dreaded Steam Cloud Save bug.

You might be able to retrieve an older save from either here:
https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage

...or here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\YOURSTEAMID\892970\remote

It is highly recommended to turn off the Steam Cloud Save feature FIRST, then move your recovered character and world to here:
C:\Users\YOURUSER\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim

Move your character file into the "characters_local" folder (if present, otherwise create it), and the world files into the "worlds_local" folder.

It is also HIGHLY recommended to do periodical backups of all your data. Shice can happen and data can get destroyed. External hard drives are cheap. Even a USB stick will suffice.

Good luck restoring your save file!

Turning off cloud saves doesn't help. Same thing happened to me again. I restored from a save location that previously worked and still reset back to day 1. I suppose you could spam save in separate folder every time you play but that's a horrible workaround, and as I said, just because a restore worked one time doesn't mean it will work the next.
