your most painful death.
just had it. like wth. the game really wanted me dead. on the ship. near a swamp shore. with 2 wraiths and 3 leeches comeing after me after i just disposed a serpent which greatly damaged the boat (was my first serepent encounter. HOLY CRAP thankfully i had a good bow) and i died to the wraith cause it pushed me into the water and well enemies can attack in water. you just die.
and i was easy half a world away from homebase. no portals no shortcuts. the longship lost on the other end of the world aswell.
only had basic armor and weapons and a karve at my base.
i was like i will never make it there.
but i dont wanna waste the materials for another longship. so stubborn me went with the karve.
OH BOI. easyly the worst desecion i had made so far. it took me TWO HOURS to reach my gravestone. the wind was always comeing from the front.
i made it in the end. the big ship survived with 10% hp left before i could finally make repairs.
i easy lost years of my life doing this nerve wise. 3 storms on the way. got chased by some kind of flying insect along the way but was able to outrun it with the boat.
LESSON LEARNED. make portal bases along the way and BUILD ANOTHER ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ LONGSHIP just in case this ♥♥♥♥ happens again. i got it...
and one final time because it has to be said (i wasnt on mistlands yet so please no spoilers) :
♥♥♥♥ THE SWAMP. even with silver gear. ♥♥♥♥ THE SWAMP. give me something to counter the stupid wet status. please tell me there is a way later on....
i am in silver age btw. mountain biome was WAY more fun than swamp. i probaly missed the method to deal with constant wet status in swamp keep that in mind.
atleast cold problem is gone for now... thanks wolves.
so why do i write this?
cause after this experience which i didnt have before in a game since old school back then anymore i wanna know what others experienced in this game in terms of most painful deaths.
i cannot believe this game is early access. the polish is great for an indie early access title.
aside some jank of course (♥♥♥♥ height difference when fighting enemies seriously what is wrong with that enemies can hit you fine but you hit thin air)
that was my blogheim.

most painful had to be during my first play through. i had just completed my iron set, had my swamp key, my wishbone, my frostner. and decided to take the longboat and see if i could find the base of that giant tree in the sky. found the edge of the world. thought "oh thats neat." went to turn around, and the current pulled me off the edge. wind was blowing in my favor and everything. lost all my gear + a longship, and you cant sail over the edge again just to grab your stuff. its gone...

We spend about an hour in the Mistlands, clear some mobs, set up a portal near a dungeon, go into the dungeon and clear it though get pretty beat up doing so. Just about ready to head out and hit the portal and the game crashes.
Come back, my partner, the host, is safe back at base, i am still in the dungeon, still beat up. The portal and everything else we had done for 45 mins or so was gone. The dungeon was full. I was dead.

Was harvesting obsidian in the Mountains when a Stone Golem took offense to my actions. One poor block attempt later and He punted me far enough to send me falling down the mountain to my death. Lesson learned. Do not engage Stone Golems near very steep cliffs.

Din’t eat but was running around doing things. I had withered my health from little falls. So when I Jumped from my balcony I took 5 damage and died on my table in front of my friends.

Was racing towards my tamed lox and was happy to see them being rendered unharmed and unmolested. So happy in fact that completely missed pair of squitos. Slowed down to walk as my stamina pool was being emptied. Only noticed them by the buzz a fraction of a sec before they come in from behind. Get stung twice.
Eating 1st biome foods. Wearing some sporting garments as armor. Weapon and shield are top notch. Sudden rush of ♥♥♥♥ to the brain, try to outrun them, they follow, stamina is gone.
Do quick 180 and parry the first, stagger-meter rises. Second one punches through block. Dead.
Lessons, again, are;
1) do not run stamina pool to nothing
2) vigilance to enemies is paramount
3) only eat and dress as for a walk in the meadows IF you are actually there
4) less panicking, more swinging
Had I remembered any one of these, I would had been fine.
Just love how this game teaches us to be a true Viking

Keeping details vague since you're not interested in spoilers.
Coming at a boss with a wrong strategy, getting hammered, and then finally getting back to get my stuff and.. the boss doesn't despawn! I've lost multiple armour sets, characters, and worlds to that boss because stuff this, start again. That boss was much easier last time, I'm not sure if I got better or it got nerfed - though I did come at it different.
My most painful death though is usually the latest, and in this case because it was embarrassing. Good food, good armour, high stats doing well just chilling out mining a thing - when out of nowhere a one star shows up. This thing hits hard, but I've taken on several at once before and come out fine, but mentally I was just not expecting combat. I miss all my parrys, half my hits, I'm backed into a corner (of my own making) getting staggered and running out of stam - but that's ok because my health was draining way faster than I realised and I was already dead. Slept where I respawned to clear night spawns and portaled back to my corpse 5m away. Could have been worse, that portal could have been destroyed.

Oh, and my most painful deaths are like yours, OP--usually involves finding the plains while sailing around the world, far sooner than I should, and it's always super far away from my base.
Nothing beats having to put together the resources to rebuild the big boat, get some armor and food, sail back, taking forever....find your gear....and get killed by the same damn deathsquito all over again.

Lessons about the swamp:
1. NEVER take a boat anywhere near a swamp for much time--those Draugr archers will happily walk underwater to that boat and shoot it. Find a forest or meadow nearby to drop your ship.
2. Learn how to fight the Abominations. The hop onto a crypt method is ideal. They always show at the worst times. Use an axe or knife on em, or use fire arrows at distance.
3. Always be rested.
4. Blunt damage and a parry shield are your friends.
5. Good food and poison potions are also a must.
I play solo (on a server, so no cheating), and have been plenty safe with just iron armor and weaps in the swamp. Once you get silver, build Frostner. It's a great swamp weapon. :)
For Abominations you can use one of those Surtling fire spawners to burn the thing just kite it in circles so the monster keeps turning around or walking over the flames, combined with my road strategy you can make it one of the easiest enemies to deal with, the rain will protect you from the Surtlings and you can just have shallow water over the spawner so they instantly take water damage.
Swamp isn't bad at all, especially with the root armour set it's superior to iron in many ways and doing it the way I suggested is very low risk so you can do it even in the bronze age.
For the wraiths just don't be there at night or parry them with a bronze buckler and don't try to run away from it they will easily be able to catch you.

Never done it but what about going to the edge of your world and having your boat fall down fully loaded with stuff possibly your player character too...
In my main world I have (had?) a portal setup at the edge of the world in Ashlands were I tried to build a pier to the edge of the world, or as close as I could get. I couldn't get as close as I wanted, but it did allow me to test swimming off the edge of the world, which was fun!
One time I wanted to get to some place in that area, so I grabbed the mats for a longship, hopped in the portal, built the ship, and started sailing around the edge of the world. Unfortunately I was horribly unprepared. I didn't bring hardly any food, a portal, wood, pretty much anything. It was a short hop to where I wanted to go...
Turns out there was no way to get around Ashlands for a LONG way. I sailed through storms, over countless rocks, tried to sail up everything I could find, and never got anywhere. Eventually I noticed my ship was about to sink, so I had to land it. Even more unfortunately I landed it near a mound of Flametal, so I and my ship started getting pounded by Surtling.
I ran away from my ship to prevent it from sinking, and was out of food at that point, so I had to run away from the combat, but now I'm stuck in the middle of Ashlands without even enough wood to make a crafting table. I saw a Black Forest not too far, maybe a days run away, but I didn't know if there was water in between.
I ran that direction and found a land bridge that got me to the Black Forest, where I was able to cut wood, get food, and (somehow that I don't remember) get to one of my bases with a portal.

Living nomadically out of a boat with my entire life in about 10 backpacks on my longship. Reaching mistlands and sailing up to a spot that looked interesting only to be swarmed by seekers and lose my boat. With no portal, or materials to build another ship to get back to where I died, it was basically game over.
That's how I play a pseudo ironman challenge in this game. It keeps you on the edge of your seat as one mistake can cost you everything.

Also if you don't like the swamp use the hoe to build a road around the islands so you can move a cart between your outpost and the crypt. Roads will remove many of the hazards such as leeches and stamina loss from wanting to jump over the water, if you dislike a biome build a base in it until you're more comfortable with it and you'll quickly learn how to deal with the problems.
Also imagine the very situation you had in the swamp happening in the plains, it can be way worse.

Hard to pick just one. :-)
I play no-portal, no-map now, so I've had deaths where I never did find the gravestone. One, I'm pretty sure I found the same area, but I couldn't find the gravestone anywhere. It was too far in the past anyways, so it really didn't matter, other than for the mystery.
In my current playthrough, I died without a spawn point set, and I ran for a day and a half with nothing, to an old black forest base that had a few basics at, including (I think) a forge, but no pick axe. I used a troll to mine me enough copper and tin to make a bronze pickaxe, mined enough for an axe and nails, made a karve, and sailed out to my plains base, with very little weapons and armor. From there I was able to get enough equipment to get back to my stuff and get it back.
Everything else in the game kind of melds together. Those horrible situations are what you (I?) remember most.
