Good tip I read here one time was to go ahead and destroy the boat and just keep the components to be used to reconstruct it when you're ready to go.

My brothers call them boat boxes. :)

I think the game only simulates the world for a certain distance around you. If you beach the boat and then move a good distance away, it'll be fine. If I don't plan to leave right away, I'll build a staging point base right next to the boat so I can keep an eye and ear on it (you can hear the crunching sound if it's being attacked). I always leave boats beached on the shore, and only lost one twice. Both times I think I was too far away to notice what was happening to it, but close enough that it was in simulation range, where stuff can spawn and attack it. Doesn't hurt to check the boat before sleeping for the night, just in case.

I parked a raft for several irl months offshore (within swim distance) and zero happened to it. I also had a karve be attacked as soon as I walked away from it in a inlet I dug. This game can be shades of gray rather than black/white.

I had this problem before but I came up with an ingenious solution.... kill the boat, dig a moat, elevate the ground inside the moat and build a small shake to put a chest in and put your boat material in there with a workbench. Your boat will be there, in pieces until you come back and rebuild it.

Agreed.

I've had Longships and Karves parked for months with nothing happening since they are within swim distance of shore.

I also agree that this game has more shades of grey than black and white issues.

Scattered materials will despawn sooner or later, a work bench is needed to provide despawn protection.

Boats tend to not survive more than a few days at a wild dock. Smack them down and stuff the parts in a chest.

Since i dont anchor it in rivermouths anymore, wipe out spawns close by, build a workbench close by and place at least 3 fireplaces around the anchor point i hadnt any boats destroyed anymore. Mostly they not even had any damage when i checked them.

Leaving one's ship beached or anchored unattended for several days in Valheim is roughly like leaving one's car parked on the street downtown in a major American city unattended for a similar period of time.

Unless one is exceptionally lucky, it will not be there when one returns. One may take measures to protect the ship. A workbench will keep mobs from spawning in the immediate area but do nothing to prevent storms or wandering mobs. If one's ship is destroyed, a workbench will keep the component parts from de-spawning.

Except for deer and fish all the creatures in Valheim seem to delight in destroying ships.

The materials used for making the ship will be in water, just jump in and you should pick them up to remake. Be sure to repair ships often as they seem to take more damage from the wake of the waves these days.

Usually the ship is either destroyed by waves or monsters. In both cases, the starting material should be found nearby - if not, it is strange ...
