Last night I mined a single Black Forest boulder that was about the same size as a copper node. Including whatever stones came from the dirt embedded in it I got about 16 piles of 50ea stone. Using a Bronze lvl3 pickaxe and fending off the regular dwarf attacks I spent about 3 game days (without any stamina buffs but I did sleep thru the night). My base was a 15 second jog away. The video above showed a yield of around 7-8 piles and didn't mention it would require travelling if a portal wasn't set up where you were mining. Overall I'd say planning things out ahead of time will better determine which method works best for one's situation.

I have noticed the exact same thing in regards to birch trees. While gathering fine wood the other day I noticed the smaller, thinner birch trees were providing me consistently more wood than the thicker, larger birch trees.

One thing I noticed about a big shoreline boulder that seemed a bit illogical but useful. I was building up a seaside plateau and needed stone for raising the terrain so I completely dug out a big boulder. The volume of the finished terrain plateau was about twice as large as the volume of the original boulder.........Valheim physics lol

you are mining the wrong rocks.
go to the plains, if you can.
find a rock that looks like the empire state building.
mine around it until it has no more ground support. Its possible for it to hang in the air off a hair thin piece so you often have to buts from viking head height all the way to the dirt.
wait for epic rain of rocks.
make portal, dump them on other side where you need them.
repeat as necessary.

Yes, small rocks are a better time investment than large rocks. Only hit large rocks if they are copper nodes where stone is a by-product, or as mentioned above, if you can make it to the plains safely so you can do the exploit.

Remember that those rock nodes goes underground like coppers do
You can find how biggers are in the mountain where a lots of them are not buried
