Will every big update require me to start over again?

As much as I love playing this game, I am afraid if every patch requires me to restart since it takes me quite a while to catch up. Do y'all think that future updates will continue to apply this until the final release?

Over 2k game days on my original seed, the world is huge, about a third explored maybe, no need to restart

" I am afraid if every patch requires me to restart since it takes me quite a while to catch up"

If you wanted to.. you can use console commands to give you a jumpstart.

Just start a new world and spawn in like 20 surtling cores, a stack of copper, tin and bronze, a stack of deer, boar and troll leather and just start from there. Would help reduce some of the early grind. Only takes a few minutes once you figure out how to do it.

Alternatively load up your current character with a boat load of early game stuff and then just use them to start on your new world. All things in your inventory transfer with the character to whatever world they are on.

Then just play honest the rest of the time and be merry.

Relax dude they gave us Mistlands they didn't have to do that if you go by your ridiculous logic.. which company hurt you? Show us on this doll.. they have given us no reason to believe they aren't going to deliver the full 9 biomes or whatever. Slow.. sure.. but it's coming.

Do keep in mind, the last biomes left to finish are in fixed locations on every map, the far north and the far south. Now that Mistlands are finished, as long as you don't go into spawn range of the poles you can save those areas for when they finally get finished (which, at current dev pace, I predict to be sometime in 2028 for the next biome and 2037 for the last). Just focus your exploring to the east and west. It's what I'm doing on my Mistlands restart.

Of course, minor updates can still be a pain for this, like how when tar pits and ice caverns were added to plains and mountains long after those biomes were "live". Any additional updates to already finished biomes will still require hunting down an unexplored one to actually find the updated terrain.

I recently restarted and started a new map, but that's largely because the map i had before the update had the placeholder for the biome they actually added, so i wouldn't have gotten the newer biome in full on that map. If you haven't explored the affected area though you can continue using the same map (might be harder for the oceans update, you kind of have to interact with those to get anywhere). Even if you do end up needing a new map, like others mentioned, you may not need a new toon. You could always bring the established toon with all their current gear onto the new world you do end up making if it comes to that, and even swap back and forth if you need more than one trip to transfer everything you wanted.

There is no requirement to restart game. If you have a lot of the seed explored, you might get a better biome setup for new area if you do, but no one makes you restart.

As long as you don’t explore the unfinished biomes you’ll be able to continue. Barring any patch that makes this untrue. I’m playing my pre-mistlands game without issue with mistlands

Yup, I have one character that has 2 seeds, one from 3rd day of game release, other is about a month later. They work great. Some of my builds make me laugh tho. Pretty primitive. Have no problems at all.

I still have my first worlds, though I have moved on from them, they all work. Mods can break things (not sure how badly), but I assume you know that and avoid them on any world you care about? Can you explain what is happening that you have to start over?

You could always bring your existing character to a new version of your current world. I've been treating the updates as if I'm doing a NG+ run. I use my existing character (armor, weapons and skills) and spawn in the boss trophies to place at the starter shrine. Then I just continue with the new content. You don't have to start over if you don't want to.
