How's the single player experience?

Is the combat simplistic? Or more dark souls?

If a game has to rely on third party modding to make it worthwhile, its a fail.

That question doesnt make any sense. In Dark Souls is all combat just one button.

So without that Dark Soul nonsense the answer is yes, combat is quiet simple.

But the game is simple. Game is minimalistic survival game with some building and chill out atmosphere.

Valhaim is chill out game.

Basically just imagine Dark Souls but your progression and success are based more on grinding for food buffs and equipment crafting materials than knowing level layouts or boss movesets.

The enemies telegraph their attacks more
The parry window is bigger
There are no real heavy attacks, though a few weapons have an alt attack
Archery is more run-and-gun style
You have significant health regen
There may as well be no PvP

Like others have said, it's nowhere near as difficult as Dark Souls, just more tedious. I've played the Dark Souls series for probably over a thousand hours and still can just hardly beat Dark Souls 1 (the easiest IMO) without dying. It was maybe 20-30 hours of playing Valheim before I ascended to the ability to do a full deathless run in solo.

You should probably be careful, because presumably you're talking to someone who has actually played Dark Souls and knows that it's neither literally nor figuratively just one button. On the other hand you might try playing Dark Souls before being compelled to answer a question because you feel ashamed that this game may have a simplified version of Dark Souls mechanics on purpose for some reason.

Yes, OP, the combat is clearly inspired by Dark Souls and/or modern Zelda games but is a simplified version of that. It's still more involved than things like Minecraft or the Forest or whatever, honestly it's probably the most coherent survival crafter combat system I've even seen.

It's fun for the first go around but once you've "beaten" the game there's nothing else to do. Restarting isn't fun and you already have the best equipment. Building isn't very good either so yeah. :/

Single player is great because you can mod it the way you love it !
If the vanilla gameplay allready fits your likings no one can say, you just must test it

I personally don't agree with the idea of buying a game or saying it's good because of mods.

The majority of games with robust mod support are good games on their own right, but become enhanced with mods.
Skyrim, Fallout, Darkest Dungeon.

The truth of the matter is Valheim's base game lacks content, modding shouldn't be the reason you buy a game

Because it's not the community's job to make sure a game has content and is worth the asking price.

We only just got a "major" content update a while ago after months of nothing. Even then, this update didn't do anything major with the game, everything is extremely minor, ironically like a mod.
The base game should be able to stand on it's own and frankly it cannot do that right now. Saying "just install mods" should not be an excuse to purchase a subpar game with a lack of base content.

Taking a quick look at the Top Mods of all time for Valheim and the proof is in the pudding. Sure there's some neat mods that add content to the game like Epic Loot with magic items and enchanting, but the majority of them are QoL mods that just make the game more enjoyable to play.
Mods that could very easily be implemented into the base game by the developers but simply are not like Pulling resources from containers for crafting, Customizable portal restrictions, a better UI, grid based planting, among other things.

These shouldn't be things that you have to mod in, but they are simply because the base game does not receive worthwhile content updates at a timely pace.

there's stamina, rolling, blocking, and parrying so it could be compared to dark souls, but the difficulty is no where close, enemies in this have really simple attacks, the danger mostly comes from being outnumbered or going into areas you arent ready for

It is good.
I play mostly (almost only) solo. The hard part might be not having support for a corpse run and you really need to plan and play a little bit safe. Always be well fed and keep an eye on the sun for nightfall.

There are a decent amount of weapons for different playstyles, and some have alternate attacks.
There is also blocking and stealth, if those are your thing.

Enemies tend to have 1-2 different attacks, so not much complexity there.
Its generaly, do you have access to food and armor that can keep you alive against x-enemy, rather than skill or blocking(although it helps a bit).
Dodging and running works on most enemies though.
Food determines max hp, stamina, and health regen, so it hugely determines if you can wander in range of enemies or not, and what biomes you can go into ''savely''.

Can't imagine multiplayer is any different when the hosting sub-forum is filled with server owners that want to host a new server but don't want to play with each other. Might as well phase out combat entirely if you play multiplayer if everybody want's to spawn stuff in.

You hook up with someone for like a day and then they quit because they play some crappy triple a title like New world.

It has the barebone basics of a hack and slash. The combat is still being worked on but I don't think it will ever touch Dark Souls in terms of depth.
There are not a lot of melee movesets to choose from and those moves are simply a basic combo and an alternate attack. Much of the one handed weapons (mace, sword, axe) share the same combo leaving little to differentiate how they can be used in combat.

Many of the enemies are quite clumsy at navigating the procedurally generated environments and while some of them do hit hard, it is pretty easy to not get hit. The window for parries and rolls are much more lenient. Most enemies give away their attack well before it is going to connect. It only gets dangerous if you go underequipped.

Valheim has a different focus. It is much more casual and not really fun for the same reasons Dark Souls is. I picked both of them up again recently.
