...and all I got were a couple of lousy mushrooms.
No shoes, there I was...
I was trying to get my character up to date before heading into the Mistlands and that meant killing Yagluth. So I set sail for his island and promptly put down a portal on top of a nice stone building that the fulings were kind enough to vacate for me.
It was quite a walk from one end of the island to the other. When I finally got to Yag's altar, I found tarpits on either side of it and a wall of dark purple mist behind it. Night was falling, so I got myself a healthy distance away and made a small cabin on the beach.
All was going well at first. I saw that the slimes had aggroed themselves out of existence without my help so I did my best with workbench and pick ax to make sure they stayed that way. I also explored the very edges of the mist, saw some hares, and found that my outdated bronze ax wasn't going to cut anything down in there. A storm started brewing and the lightning sounded like some kind of terrible beast that I didn't want to meet, so I decided not to stay long, but I did manage to snag some golden mushrooms.
It was a good trip. I felt like I had at least seen a teaser of the new place. It was time to go home and think about my Yag strategy, and if the better strategy would be to find a different location. Nearing the stone building and my portal, I saw a group of lox hanging around. Not a big deal, I passed them going the other way. But then there was a deathsquito, and a fire fuling, and they got the lox all riled up. In the midst of the stampede, I died mere meters away from my portal.
I woke up in a small but cozy cabin on the other side of the plains island wearing nothing but my underwear. A deathsquito, previously only a minor annoyance, now lived up to its name. I had only a cloudberry snack and not even a club since I had knocked down the nearby bushes to complete my cabin. Several tries and several deaths passed. I went a different route. I made a wide circle around a village, skirting the edge of the mist and somehow avoiding more 'squitos. I got about halfway across and found my way blocked. Flying death here, laughing death there. I spent the night on top of a rock in the cold rain. The next morning I made my way up a large hill. Found some rocks and small bushes and made an ax, small comfort but maybe my salvation against a 'squito. I skirted around a herd of lox, dropped down a rock and got hit by a fuling that didn't have the decency to laugh.
More trials and more errors and I finally decided to try logging in to another world. I got to a place previously visited by another me, but with the map blank, I had no idea where to find possible shelter or supplies, but I had a plan. I killed boars and ate berries like in the old days until I had enough materials to make a raft.
Back in the cabin again, I looked outside and saw the best news, calm weather, no wind. I dropped my new raft into the water and set sail on icy smooth water. I forgot to check the time of day and the sun set shortly after I set sail, but maybe I wouldn't get a chance for such calm weather again. After dark, the fog rolled in and I couldn't see anything except for my tiny map. I carefully navigated blind, not minding the slow speed because I didn't want to get too close to shore, nor too far out to sea where other dangers lurked.
It took all night, but as the sky began to get light, I saw the sparkle of my death and the square shape of my building. I watched the shore carefully. You never know what might be lurking there after all this time. I took a slow and cautious approach. Once I was a mere spear's throw from the shore I heard a loud ROAR right behind me. Not looking back, I dove into the water and swam for shore, abandoning my tiny craft. Once on the bank I turned back and saw a mighty serpent pace back and forth, angered by missing its breakfast.
I ran to my grave and retrieved my bow, but by the time I got dressed, my raft was in pieces and the serpent was swimming into the deep. Tired but relieved at my escape, I climbed the stone stairs and ported back home.
