Taming Question

If a player is not present where the animal is that is being tamed, does that pause taming or does the game continue to progress taming even when the player is absent?

I built a carrot farm next to my pig farm so there's something to do in the area at regular intervals

To the best of my knowledge, having tamed probably 100's of Valheim's wildlife, to progress the acclimatization process, one's character needs to be in close enough proximity for the taming emotes to be emitted. Having visual contact with the animal being tamed is not necessary, but being close enough to be able to is.

Similarly, tamed animals only breed when one's character is in the vicinity. To ensure tamed animals reproduce, have them in close enough proximity to one another for their happy feeling emotes to burst forth from their bodies. Tamed creatures will not breed & reproduce if a player throws down food then zones out before copulation occurs.

Thanks for all the answers. I am aware of how to tame, I was really just trying to find out the specifics of the taming process based on player presence.

Here's all the info you need for taming:
1. It takes 30 minutes of actual time to tame an animal. That's total. it doesn't have to be continuous.
2. They must be fed and not frightened, either by you or another creature
3. You must be in the area. Think of it like you're the workbench when it comes to taming.
If you leave the area taming will be put on hold. As said above you'll see little yellow hearts when the taming process is going on.
4. Know what to feed them when taming: Boars like mushrooms (red only), raspberries, and blueberries. Probably cloudberries too but I've never tried that. Wolves like raw meat but won't eat wolf meat, they're classy that way. I've seen them eat some cooked meat too but raw is best. Lox love cloudberries.
5. You can build an enclosure for taming Boars. Wolves work better with a taming pit since they destroy stuff fast. Lox you can actually tame just by staying near and sneaking since their sight and hearing are pretty bad.

Boars will eat raspberries, blueberries, cloudberries, red mushrooms, carrots, turnips, and onions. They are afraid of fire and anything that produces light (like yellow mushrooms and thistles).

Wolves will eat any raw meat (including fish) that isn't wolf meat and they will eat sausages.

Lox will eat cloudberries, barley, and flax. If the lox is injured, the first time it eats couldberries in that day it will heal.

Proximity is a factor and the little hearts are the signal they're taming. I usually get that all set up then build a garden, update my outpost or do a little knitting project I've been saving just for that occasion. My wolf cub sweaters are to die for.....

I cant point you to anything that actually says that in game. However I found a couple two star boars on a small island so built a pen and camp with a portal. I would zip in to feed them and see how they were doing. They never bred. I ended up taking down the fence and letting them fend for themselves..

I never scienced it, but I've seen videos of players claiming that you had to close by for taming and breeding to happen. I think I have seen that while playing but as I said I haven't throughly tested it.

You have to be close enough for that area to be loaded in. If you're not, then it pauses. You don't have to stare at the animals all day but you should be somewhat close. Some people like to practice their sneak skill while taming by sneaking around the pen. Or you could mine or shop trees close by while you wait. If you look over and see the little hearts, it's working.

You have to be within about a workbench's radius of the animals for them to tame. If you get too close and they see you they will attack the pen and the taming will stop until they are no longer aware of you.

My barn is right across from my garden so I farm while they tame.

Edit - it takes about a game day and 1/2 for animals to tame.

As other said . somewhere close
If you are far that place , taming process pauses and the food you leave the will be consumed anyway
