Back to topic: Doing periodic backups and using the save game backups the game already provides is MUCH more reliable then hard shutting down your computer, or even closing it through task manager.

If you are that intimate with your computer, you should know that doing backups is one of the most important things when using a computer and that restoring a savegame from a backup a much more foolproof way than hard shutting down your computer.

Let me break it down for you, since you don't know what you are talking about. When you die, the game begins saving your information. If the computer shuts down mid-write, then the information it was writing to gets screwed up. The year the computer was made doesn't make a difference. A bad write corrupts information just as well in 2022. The only difference is hard drives are much faster so its harder to accidentally get the right timing to screw up your info.

Instead of following this braindead advice, why not just find your save file and restore the archived character? If you make a copy of the info, you've got 0 chance of messing anything up.

Yeah, nah. I am not going to risk damaging my computer for that. Computers shouldn't be rebooted that way unless absolutely necessary. A bad in-game decision is not something that makes a reboot absolutely necessary. Lawdy.

I'm afraid a lot of the hard reboot / reset concerns of 2022 are legacy. I just built this PC. It isn't from 1964 and it doesn't take up an entire city block. There is a "reset" button on my PC case (provided by the manufacturer) which connect to pins on my mother board (provided by the manufacturer).

My PC reboots to desktop in about 10-15 seconds. It isn't a hassle, it doesn't do damage.

Is it cheating? Kinda maybe? I used to rage power off my NES when I was a kid.

I'm not trying to force my views on anyone , just options.

If resetting your PC caused damage I think there would be a lot more accountability in line way before the guy that said on an internet forum "hey you don't need to deal with a corpse recovery if you don't want to"

It's great that you have an intimate relationship with your computer, but then why would you go for a brutal hard reboot instead of one of the other solutions suggested in this thread?

At the end of the day, if you want to cheat just use the devcommands or backup your save ir alt-f4 the game. Having to hard reboot your computer ends up being more cumbersome and take longer. But hey, I'm not the one who is intimate with his computer so you do you. I'm just glad a few people chimed in here to point out how bad the suggestion was.

All he did was reboot. It wasn't a Hard Reset nor a Cold Boot or Hard Reboot.

It was just a simple reboot. Harmless if not writing to hd. js

Duplicati can give any game/world as many restores as you wish.

That said, the only time a world save file or character file is accessed is when saving the game, or when loading the game. Neither of which happen after you die.

Taking the hard reset option is a poor choice of moves, you can bring up task manager before embarking on your quest and go into Performance, right click to bring up the Suspend option on Valheim so you only have to click the OK button if you are that paranoid, the best option by far is to simply keep an up to date copy of the game file in the same folder, it's small, quick and very light and super easy to overwrite.
if windows happens to be updating while you reset or turn off power you can corrupt the system no problem.
I have 2600 days in on my main server and have never failed to recover a body, can be tricky some times, but it is worth remembering that you can never lose what you have, if it proves too tricky simply employ developer mode, fly over there in God mode and take whats yours, I've never had to resort to it but it's there as an option

Hahaha, corrupting your save file. That's a great way to recover your entire world back to day 1.

It is possible to avoid drowning deaths by logging out, and dumping your items into a second world. If you haven't learned to max out food/well rested buff, journey during the day, then portal home at night, that's on you.

Portals exist to cut out the vast majority of pain during a corpse run. Drop a portal INSTANTLY after landing anywhere. Don't take any chances.

What a terrible piece of advice. If you want to cheat at least do you it in a way that is safe for your computer. Just back up your world/char files before your adventure and restore them if you died.

DON'T EVER RESTART YOUR COMPUTER OR SHUT IT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME!

Sorry for yelling, but NEVER, EVER do that.

1. Your world will most likely become corrupted resulting in a reset to day 1. We then have to deal here with all the people that tried your recommendation and now have absolutely no clue on how to restore their world.

2. Even worse, your Windows installation might become corrupted (less likely, still a chance), and then your computer might not even start anymore.

So, please, either delete your post, or amend it that there's a HUGE risk of destroying your world.

That said: If you haven't been preparing and bringing a portal with you (IMHO you then shouldn't be save scumming and instead be man/woman enough to pay the price), since the latest patch you can easily restore your world two hours (at worst) before you last logged off.

I've been known to task manager kill the game in a moment of pique, and go back to an autosave. Or uninstall. Depends on whether I think the game's misbehavior deserves a deletion or temporary ban.

Well, you personally can of course do whatever you like, but please don't recommend potentially destructive actions to people who have no clues about a computer.
